grease guns and zerk fittings.

I was servicing my "new-to-me", 2015 4wd Tacoma and ran into a slight problem. When lubing the driveshaft, I had no problem with the three fittings on the rear driveshaft, but was stumped on the two fittings on front drive shaft. The nozzle on my grease gun is too large to fit into the cavities where the fittings are located. What are you guys and gals using that will fit in there and do a good job?

 

A smaller gun that holds the 3 oz. tubes might help.

 

Use a needle injector it is about 2 inches long fits up in there nicely.

You have to rotate the shaft slowly till you find where the nozzle fits on zerk, on mine the u-joint at the t-case the zerk has to be pointed at roughly two o-clock for the nozzle to fit in the drv shft and hit the zerk, the one at the front diff I don't remember any tricks so it must just fit.

 

That's what I have and works on both shafts.

Flexible hose allows me to access that tricky one on the front shaft. As someone mentioned, I rotate it to around the 2 o'clock position.

 

I don't even have zerks on my front..

 

Same here. A flexible hose works on the front zerk.

 

Remember the two fronts are 90 degree fittings, at least on mine.

Also, get a pneumatic grease gun if you have air. Well worth the expense

 

I have this exact gun and was able to do the front shaft one as well. My recall u-joints on lower driveshaft don't even have zerks... so I have this huge grease gun and grease tube for one zerk lol.

 

Did it today myself and it works well. Made it easy to do. It’s the only one that I had to use it for though. I was able to use the LockNLube fitting to get the other 4 zerks with no issues. One suggestion is to make sure you wrap the grease gun fitting with something like Plummer’s tape or something for a leakproof fit.

 

I know this is an old post, and this may be a dumb question....but how do you use that needle injector? Do you push it into the zerk?

 

I could'nt figure out how to use the needle injector, it just made a mess. Ended up for me that the cheap grease gun fittings I can get from 'Canadian Tire' actually fit inside and allow me to grease the 90 degree fittings. They are just the right size.

 

With the needle point attachment you need to be able to push that little ball in the zerk in before you pump the grease.
The needle zert point holds that ball in so the grease can flow into the zert. If your at an angle and that ball doesn’t get push in, your going to have a mess.

How much grease are you pumping into them? Are these "flush" type u-joints where you keep squeezing until new grease flows out? I'm not sure if these are the sealed type that shouldn't be flushed or are they flushable? Sounds like I'm talking about toilets lol.

 

I didnt know what I was doing when I 1st did mine, so I broke the seals apparently. Now have to flush them until clean grease comes out.

I was told you just put 'a bit', but that measurement amount is very vague to me.
