My single cab 4cyl appears to have 5x7 speakers in the door. Components. Anyone try to put 6x9s in there. I know mods are likely but i have a pair of nice kenwood 6x9s that i hate to throw away from an old car. If you have made them work how do i wire them considering there is component tweeters high in the door?

    Thanks for any help

I refer to Crutchfield.com when I am looking to fulfill my compatible speaker fantasies.
I don't have experience installing speakers, but:

Here is a link for you.
No 6x9s are listed, but 6x8s are. This may mean you have to modify the opening to fit 6x9s.

Wait for more responses; maybe post a new thread in the Tacoma Garage > Audio & Video section.
I am unsure if we are allowed to post a redirecting link to a thread in another forum section.

Ive replaced the door speakers in my single cab with shallow mount 6x8s. Not the greatest upgrade, as the plastic mounting thingy doesn't sound the greatest (lots of crappy resonance at lower freqs). The shallow mount Kickers that I bought were cheap, but I think that a deeper speaker would sound better, but that would require a spacer of some sort, or different mounting bracket, as the magnet would interfere with the window mech.

I wish that ********* still made MDF adapters for our trucks, and haven't found any substitutes.

I might make my own, and just use a 6.5 speaker, as it would be easier to cut that shape out.

You would probably be better with some 6.5 Components as far as sound quality goes. If you're after more bass, maybe put a small 8" or 10" sub behind the seat?

Yup, I replaced my stock tweeters, and wired them separately to my Kenwood headunit, so front amp runs tweeters, rear runs door speakers. I have a 12 inch shallow mount sub as well.

Im def going with a 6.5 component setup if I can find one with tweeters that can be flush mounted in the stock location.

I was able fit these Infinity KAPPA 682.11cf 6x8 in the front and read doors of my DC. The front speakers required metal cutting on the doors. Also the plastic speaker mounts needed a lot of trimming.
6x9 maybe too big. May not fit the interior door panel speaker opening also.

if I can find my pics I bought adapters and put in 6.5 component from Infinity to match the rear 6x8s

Instead of getting knee-deep in an interior audio project, @Shakers may want to use the advice here to ensure not only good fit but sound audio quality; once you start trimming, there really is no going back.

Seems like even 6x8$ are pushing it; best thing would be either list the speaker you have on Craigslist or find someone to trade with.

What little I have read about car audio is that buying a good and worthy component system (with their own crossovers (module or built-in) and thus tweeters) will greatly enhance your listening pleasure.

The downside to a component system is more work installing and possibly damaged tweeters if you have kids or friends that like to poke at things with sharp objects (the same goes for pretty-looking subs exposed to 7 year olds with pocket knives).

Long story short: 6x8 coaxial speakers may be in your future.

Or keep reading; maybe kick panel speakers are for you. Look into them on Crutchfield. The custom enclosures are usually very expensive (not implying I know what size speakers fit those enclosures).

Source: I have wanted to upgrade my car audio, but I have no experience installing anything; I just use Crutchfield to browse.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. I think I'm finally going to let those 6x9s go. It been 18yrs I've been hoping to put them in a vehicle with no luck. I'm gonna make a wishlist on Cruthfield and ask the wife for a whole new system for Christmas. Think I'm gonna try making the 6x8s work since theres a better selection than the 5x7s.

I replaced all four of my speakers in my '04 with 6x8 Kicker 44KSC6804's. They are decent enough for the price point, and I didn't want to deal with a component system. Keep a dremel on hand because even with the 6x8's I had to trim out the plastic speaker housings on the front doors. Other than that installation was a breeze.

For extra bass, I recommend the Kicker 11HS8 Hideaway... I wanted a sub but there's just no room in the cab of a Tacoma for a traditional sub box. I put one of those in my truck because it has a built in amp and fits perfectly out of the way under the drivers seat without compromising the ability to adjust the seat. It's small and obviously isn't gonna blow anyone's doors off, but provides a nice layer of bass... If you really like a lot of bass though this may not fit the bill for you haha.

Best of luck with the install!

Edit: I also ordered from Crutchfield, because like everyone else has said their customer service ROCKS!

I'm with the "get whatever size that doesn't require you to cut up your door, and a small sub under the seat" crowd.

Even mid range 5.25's are going to be nicer than higher end ~20 year old speakers.

I fancy this mentality as well; make do with a compatible size; I can change it out down the road. If I'm wanting to fit a bigger speaker in a smaller hole, I think I would be better off spending more on that smaller speaker than to fabricate a larger mounting area. It seems ridiculous to modify what hundreds of products were already designed to fit the provided space.

Those hundreds of options can be narrowed quite quickly and I would still have a well-performing speaker for less than a headache in replacing speakers in a modified mount.
