Would you buy a 08 Taco that ran with out a air filter?

On a dirt road for over 30 miles, wide open!

    Well for $11K I couldn’t say NO

It all started when this 2008 4x4 Tacoma came in my job on a trade in ( I’m the facility manager of a northern California Honda dealership) I won’t say which one and you’ll see why later.

I was very interested in the truck for it had total chaos uppers a 2” lift (I think, total Nub) and brand new big O all terrain tires. I had a side job up in Lake Pillsbury California which has 30 miles of dirt road to get to the project, so I figured what better way to test drive and see if I like the truck than taking it Off-road and on highways?

The truck ran great and I fell in love with it almost instantly as I took it off road, so At that point I knew I was going to buy her (you can help name her latter).

When I return back home and brought it back to the dealership I said TAKE MY MONEY!!! Well the tech had a few more things that they had to do to the vehicle before they could sell it to me, and this is where the shit show begins.

The truck had a TRD cold air intake system on it which was zipped tied shut (broken clips) when the tech took the zip tie off we both noticed that there was NO F@€# Air Filter....I immediately began to panic because I flashed backed to all the dirt road, sliding full throttle straight hammer down driving I just put the truck through, I mean straight send it mode!!!

So I tossed and turned all night long (for 3 days) thinking there’s no way I’m going to buy this truck but also in the tossing and turning I knew I would not find an 08 Tacoma with the mods for under 19,000.

So in short would you do it?

As many dirty, crumpled, soggy, torn.....you get the picture.....air filters as I've seen in people's cars and trucks......I believe in compression testing.

Name it Christina if you must, she's 'durty'. Or 'Sandy'...sandy vagen.

True, I really don’t know how long? But that zip tie was brand new (super white not a smudge on it) My hypothesis is he snatched out the washable reusable filter at trade in. That $95 washable reusable filter probably found its way to Letgo,Facebook marketplace, here????

Now the real ? Is who and the hell trades a taco in for a Honda????

Is the secondary filter (post filter) still there? Compression test passed all 6 cylinders? If so probably not a big deal

Even seen a drag car with an air filter? A pro stock pull truck? I know thats not really an apples to apples comparison, but my point is its probably not a big deal. Honestly I would be more worried about what other things the previous owner neglected, if he couldn't manage an air filter..

I think he took it out and sold it???

But Yes the secondary filter was there. And cylinders 1, 3, 5, 2, 6 recorded 175 psi and #4 cylinder came in at 180 psi...and for the over kill value.....Your boy ran the Bore Scope too!! The oil filter was new ish??? 1,100 miles give or take. The interior was spot less and that Always speaks volumes...

I did discover stock Denso plugs on driver side and NPK on pass. So lazy? Your right you’ll never know what Sandy went through......

But She did get all fluids FLUSHED x2 ALL new filters, plugs, battery, and A valve adjustment. Oh and put a Torque wrench in all the right places. Even looked under the skirt and played with the zerk fittings ..

They came with 3 NGK and 3 Denso from the factory. So good thing you changed them out. Overall sounds like you got it well taken care of
