Would it be a big deal for you to post up a vid link showing your crank time issue?

5 seconds of cranking is way too long. That sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Is it only when it's sat for awhile, or randomly?

I just checked the video I took of it earlier. 5 seconds was a bit of an exaggeration, its only 2 - 3 seconds but that still feels long. It didn't do this when I first got it, today was the first time. It did it both when I started it cold and then after about an hour of driving after I stopped to grab some food.

Hey guys, sorry to bump such an old thread, but I'm having the same issue with my brand new 2017. Of course it's intermittent and the dealer can't replicate it. @Strech, was it easy for the dealer to diagnose your battery? Or did the issue come and go?

I read it as it ended up being the floor mat keeping the clutch from being depressed fully, not the battery.

If you use the clutch cancel button do you still encounter the problem. If so a load test on the battery should say if it is bad, which is a easy and quick test to perform by a tech. You might be able to borrow/rent a battery tester from NAPA or a auto-parts story and check yourself.

Yeah, that's what it seemed like, I just have a hard time believing that's my issue. I'll take a closer look at the mats when I get it back from the dealer. I did put in Husky Weatherbeaters, but I had the issue with the carpet mats too.

The dealer is holding onto it tonight to test it cold in the morning. They load tested the battery today and said it was fine. I would think if it was a battery issue, it wouldn't be so intermittent. It's only happened twice in 500 miles, and after several minutes of retrying it, suddenly it will start.

I didn't even think of the clutch start cancel, but if they can't diagnose it, I'll try that when I get it back. Another search turned up the clutch sensor needing to be adjusted...so the clutch start cancel should be able to help diagnose that. Always frustrating to have an issue that the dealer can't replicate.

I'll report back when I have some answers.

Well, I picked up the truck today, and they couldn't find any issues. The dealer attributes the problem to the floor mats.

I think it was just operator error. On my WRX, I could push the clutch in enough for it to engage (maybe 3/4 of the way to the floor), and that would be enough to trip the safety switch and start the car. On the Tacoma, you can push the clutch in far enough to shift, but that won't be far enough to trip the switch. You have to push it to the floor. I tested this theory in the dealer parking lot. I pushed the clutch in 90% of the way, plenty far enough to engage and shift, and tried the ignition...no dice. Give it that extra 10%, and it fires right up. I either need to adjust my habits, or adjust the sensor out a little bit.

I think the Toyota switch design could be improved. Rather than a prox switch that sends a signal at full pedal push, it should be mounted such that it sends a signal when it loses contact with the pedal (ie. as soon as there's pressure on the pedal). Maybe they do it for safety reasons.

My 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport Automatic has the same starting problems. It takes 5 to 6 tries for the engine to start.
