I bought my yota on August 31st at 9:30pm (the Dealership closed at 8:00 ;)). I've been looking and researching for quite some time, and after my 2002 Jeep Liberty still refused to get more than 8.5mpg after running dry-gas, changing oxygen sensors, changing an injector, and changing all the plugs, I finally had my justification.

I ended up getting a 2010 White DCSB TRD OR that was dealer demo and came with chrome mirror and handle covers, tint, and Weston running boards. Since the dealer was listing the running boards as being worth $500, I told him they could keep them (I found the same one's online for like $160 and would get them later if I ever wanted them, though not likely). So, they will be taken off in a week by the dealer, unless I get antsy and do it myself.

So, here is what she looked like the morning after purchase:

Here is the how she currently looks (I'll try to keep this up to date):

So, lets see how this all comes together.

I did my best to document the mod. I took a few pictures and this is what I came up with. First, I should give credit to Aalders for his write-up. It was spot on. The only thing I should add is the following:
    • SPDT Switch (RS: 275-0625)
    • 20guage Wire
    • 1 20-22guage Wire Tap (RS: 64-3053
    • 2 20-22guage crimp connectors (RS: 64-3108)
    • Solder
    • Heat Shring Tubing (RS: 278-1610)
    • Standard Poster Putty.

Hopefully that helps. I spend about 30-60 minutes siting on the floor at my local Radio Shack sifting through their drawers trying to decide what I would need without having any idea what size the wires and such would be.

Here are my pics (not very many):

Wire-Harness detached, sheath cut back, and 1st 3 wires pulled to the side (green/white/red).
    08b85f53_f8966b57942fd464a37c74c53becea73f014b188.jpg

    Switch I bought:
    7c884265_2100c75ccb194e24e7e963c936e1ba721d4324de.jpg

Make sure you cut 3 2-3" sections of wire. Then, strip both ends of 2 and one end of the last. I did not do this. So, I was stuck stripping wires that were attached up high and it was not very convenient.

Having never soldered before (other than a pediatric dental space maintainer --- off topic), I stuck the switch into the steering wheel while I soldered it. I'm gonna have to youtube this and learn how to solder the real way. Edit, I outlined a better method (using poster putty) lower down this post.

Better visual of the switch with the cables attached and the shrink tubing in place (I used a grill lighter to heat the shrink tubing).

I don't have a final picture yet. Here's the reason: I do now. Look below.

I was able to test it and it all worked perfectly. It would turn the camera on with a flip of the switch and when not manually engaged, the Reverse would still activate the camera. HOWEVER, when cramming everything back together, I accidentally broke one of the leads off the switch. Now, it will turn on/off with the switch, but the reverse no longer activates it. So, I'm gonna try and swap out the switch tomorrow. I will update the final picture then.

UPDATE: 9/10/2010 (Finished the project the next day)

So, I had to be creative. With the lead breaking on the switch, I tried to just solder it back together >>> FAIL. So, I had to removed the switch and use a new one. However, I really didn't want to have to cut off my crimp connectors and shorten my stock wiring. Therefore, I decided I would try to leave the wires crimped in place and just solder the switch in the cramped space between the mirror and ceiling. DING DING DING --- I had an idea. I ran in and grabbed some old poster putty and stuck 2 pieces to the back of a piece of rigid cardboard (from the packaging of one of my components) and stuck the wire needing to be held to one piece and the switch to the other. This helped me to keep both pieced steady while I soldered it. To be quite honest, this solder job was 100x better than my first attempt.

Wiring done, about to close it back up (notice my patriotic Red/White/Blue shrink tubing...?)

Final Product. Though I was bummed not to be able to find a black switch of some sort that might blend in better, I think the final switch is discrete enough.

I hope this helps any of you that might be interested in doing this. I should add, this is my first electrical mod to a car and I feel like it went really well. Just need to learn to solder ;).

This weekend, I went forward with painting my Chrome Mirror and Handle Covers to match my Super White truck. I went this route because I feared the potential affects of my lack of skill in painting causing irrepairable damage and unsightly appearance to my beautiful new truck. That, and the dealer game them to me. So, here was what I used. I didn't take to many step by step photos, but this will have to do for now.
    • Denatured Alcohol (to clean)
    • Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter [2 coats]
    • Dupli-Color Sandable Primer [2 coats]
    • Dupli-Color Perfect Match Paint (Toyota Super White) [2.5 coats] <<< Get at least 2 cans
    • Krylon Clear Gloss (Clear Coat) [3 coats]

    IMAG0228_58f1c438d7144da1b5e9f9a95f6e8812fbc4957e.jpg

Here are all my parts layed out. The tailgate latch cover is not present because I tried a different painting method on it (with poor results). I'll get to stripping the paint off of that later.

    IMAG0221_a1f2b496b7e4b5a25bf8341fff35a50a87a007c5.jpg

And here is a comparison picture that night with just the Mirror and Driver's handle cover on.

    IMAG0237_801c7399e1358f3c8679f2b4df9b092ea137ada1.jpg

And here's a final picture the next morning.

    IMAG0240_08aa545e0eabf7c85757c72b68e697dd70d7c460.jpg

Conclusion: The whole process was pretty straight forward. All the products were fairly easy to use, but I would recommend keeping in an area free of too much wind (kicking up dust and such that might stick is frustrating at times). Also, the Dupli-Color Perfect Match Paint wasn't exactly "Perfect". It looks good enough, but it's definitely not exact. There's a small hint of yellow, I believe. Also, the texture isn't nearly as glossy. However, I probably didn't use as many coats as I should have and it's pretty common to not match the finish of auto paint with a spray can.

I decided to use some of the rubber coating material used to cover tool handles and such to cover my lower front valance. I'd seen the idea recommended here on the site an thought it was a perfect idea for me. This was perfect primarily because once again, it was reversable. The material can simply be peeled off if I ever decide I don't like it or if needed for re-sale/trade-in.

This is the product I used (purchased at Ace Hardware) was Performix-Plasti Dip.
    IMAG0226_1ae08c0c410cd29a58064af2253a68f675f79c63.jpg

This is my masking job and the first coat on. Just before I applied the first coat and after I masked it off, the sky started to rumble. So, I immediately applied the first coat and then pulled the front end of the truck in the garage.
    IMAG0222_4ad8c3a6c38c66881538b890dba6e7e5440a0be8.jpg

    Here is the final product:
    IMAG0234_08fca0b74b938259778b39caa68af724f6b21e94.jpg

Conclusion: Extremely easy mod. Biggest challenge was removing the masking tape at the end. Unfortunately, I had to use a razor blade. I was not excited by that approach due to the underlaying stock bumper. I didn't want to scar it. However, it turned out quite well.

Thanks. Funny thing is, when I was looking, I really wanted the Magnetic Gray, but got a good deal on this and white was my #2.

And thanks for being my first visitor ;)

Same here. I wouldn't trade it for any color, now.

    Here's a couple closer pics:
    IMAG0242_178f8e8de07af5284ed926b6d867d988d1ff50e8.jpg

You can see here that the lines aren't quite as clean as I'd like. The rubber coating has to be cut when removing the tape. This can be a bit difficult. I'd recommend pulling the tape immediately after spraying and re-taping as needed.
    IMAG0243_89262ecd4ab2a955b5ceb3b2eba8940cd904f262.jpg

    Hope that helps.

I know what you're probably thinking, "This has got to be one crazy looking mount to support all three of those devices." Or maybe you're not thinking that and my sense of humor has gone completely stale. Either way, let me explain further.

I'm a bit of a tech nerd when it comes to computers and phones (the later primarily). So, I take great pride in the phones I own, as I do great research before deciding on one particular device. Well, that aside...

I have Verizon's HTC Droid Incredible. This phone has been my favorite device I've ever owned. And what's better, Android keeps releasing new updates that allow for greater usability. The primary functions I'm highlighting in this post are the basic phone function, FREE GPS, and 720p video recording capability (not to mention the 8mp camera).

Anyway, I looked for a long time to find a phone mount for my car. A while back (when I still owned my Jeep Libery), I found the SoundGate M2 (if that link doesn't work, just ebay it - it's very popular and usually sells for just under $10 shipped).

This device is extremely simple to setup, but due to it's 2 hinges and rotatable mount, this thing can be configured in almost countless ways. Just be aware, once you mount the base, you can't swivel much.

Here's a few pictures of the mount. I secured it directly centered above the CD slot:
    IMAG0250_f553b339b3b205a4cff88ffdb20652acebbc9832.jpg
    IMAG0251_242d4a31b736f0645aaaa13d1f5eb374a46308c8.jpg

Here are a few pictures of the small tab you have to mount to your phone that works as sort of a key to secure it to the mount. I chose to mount it to my case, since I rarely take that off. Also, I was initially hesitant how much I'd like it and didn't want to stick it to my battery cover. However, after the few months I've had it, it is yet to bother me at all:
    IMAG0253_c75ff397c3e29fce4a4c64878981a1506c602aa9.jpg
    IMAG0254_5110ad633bd808e9872e1bf03709f11bcf18b357.jpg

Here are a couple pics of my phone in action (I had to use the wife's phone to snap these shots since my phone was being the model). The first is 'Unplugged' and the second is with my power cord and 3' headphone that is plugged into the AUX.
    IMG00043-20100925-2238-1_a72352fce45b65fc52e63e5f430fd435fdf67686.jpg
    IMG00042-20100925-2238_a6449806ae1d57cac7e34b653f77e65a72a8b2ab.jpg

Finally, here is an example of a test video I made. Be aware, I had literally just tightened down the screws while in the Sonic Drive-Thru and this is me pulling out of the parking lot. Also, this is in WVGA format, and not 720p. I forgot to chance the setting back after recently doing a Factory Reset to my phone (another story).
    th_Truck_CameraMountTest_d44e3032b02b7cf337f38097d39b19aa8e3ea74f.jpg

All in all, I think it has worked out quite well. I'm not sure how often I'll actually use it, but it's still pretty cool. I think I might use it to record some winter drives primarily. Also, it might be interesting to stream live video while I'm driving.

Perhaps more 'novelty' than 'functionality', but I still like it

I used everything you did for the backup camera and it doesn't work. Is it because I have a manual tranny?

I got it! Wire splice wasn't making contact. Thank you for the part #s!
