Whether or not the top spacer will wreck your truck, won't it severely decrease ride quality? So isn't the pre-load, bilstein type better no matter how you look at it?

A top plate spacer doesnt affect the spring rate like a pre load spacer does. A Pre load spacer will make the ride more firm.

I did quite a bit of research on this before I got mine. Dont go over a 1.25inch spacer (2.5 inches of lift) it causes too much strain on the cv, brake lines and boot. Don't jump your truck (lol no crap but gotta say it) It causes a rapid travel of the suspension causing it to bottom out quickly and violently increasing your chance of damage with a top plate spacer. If you don't get too aggressive off road you shouldn't have any problems. I wonder if the guy from the pic chris4x4 posted half mangled that Billy before he headed back to camp and decided to take on the pot hole from hell.

top plate spacer= on top of the strut assembly with no preload onto the coilover assebmly (shock).

coilover spacer= spacer thats below top plate in which adds preload to the shock.

If you put on a top plate, whatever size the top plate is will be equal to the amount of "extra" droop or over extend on the shock. Your essentially lowering the whole assembly x amount (spacer). once that is lowered that amount and you still allow your shock to "travel" its usually numbers the rest of the suspension components are not used to or will not allow that extra x given amount of "travel".

But this has been repeated over and over in better terms but I thought Id join in the arguement.

I just installed the OME 3in kit with the 3/8 spacer and I seem to have limited down travel, I go over a speed bump and it feels like the suspension droops then bottoms out. Not sure what the issue is.

The issue is that with a 3" lift you have abouy 1" down travel

is that with every 3" lift? before adding 5100's and uca's to my 885's i probably had about 1" DT. i didnt take measurments, but i have alot more now, especially since my uca dont hit my coils anymore.

Ya with aftermarket uca's you do gain a little more travel. And you probably feel like you have more dt because the valving on the 5100 is much more aggressive then stock as well as they are specifically designed not to over extend. That being said with stock shocks and the OME coils you felt the bottoming out a lot more because they werent designed not to over extend. Now that i think about it also the 5100 might give a little more travel as well. Over all good choice with the upgrade!

Oh and tacomanator its not for every 3" lift you do not get the feel of maxins out. The lift has to be properly made with the correct shocks for whatever springs you run with nice set of ucas

You guys have me all worried about spacers now. I have the OME 881's and I believe a .5 top spacer. Toytec said I could use my stock tokico for the front, so I did.

I havn't had any trouble with mine except that I didn't have the front end alligned after the lift and am showing some wear now on the outer front tires.
But all this talk of damage and ride quality or shocks exploding and shit now has me worried.
I have never wheeled my vehicle until recently and now I'm paranoid.
I am also using the stock UCA.
What do I need to get my front assembly up to par? I'm guessing that it is the actual coil (881) that is providing most of the lift and the .5 top spacer is just giving me a boost.
Is there a better lift out there that I can get that's not going to hurt my wallet?

The kit from toytec was a 3 in lift/level.

your fine. some spacers (like REVTEC) are 2.5" on top of the coil. 2" is the most you can go without strain to the upper balljoints. a 2" spacer will give about 2.5" of lift.

you have a .5" spacer. your fine

Generally, A 2" thick spacer will give 4" lift. So a .5"' spacer will give 1" lift, etc.

I have the fat bob's lift kit for a 5-lug. It has a top mount spacer that lifts 2.75" in the front. Does anyone know of longer travel shocks for the front?
