Any negatives for the manual transmission

Having some sill rust issues and my 2016 is out of warranty. Planned on keeping it a good 12 years. Anyway, have a blue longbed, sport, with JBL package.

Once I got it I regretted not getting the offroad for suspension and locker. Also not a fan of the transmission. So, do you lose anything besides crawl control on the offroad manual?

No hill assist on my TRD OR SB MT.

 

You get Steeper Diferential Gearing, A-TRAC and Sunglasses Holder in place of Crawl Control. Reverse sucks for backing up a grade if you have a load though.

 

Only negative to me is that Toyota doesn't offer the manual transmission in the long bed format

 

You have a manual hill assist, it is called a hand brake

 

i wouldn't call that a negative, myself.

OP it kinda depends on what you like and want. the MT in the 3rd gens is good. @shakerhood is about to tell you how it's better than previous gens.

the reverse gear is too long, and the clutch accumulator numbs the feel. and the ECU tune will likely need updating. OR's are soft and you may want suspension & tires?

you can fix all that and easily make it the truck you want. go for the MT.

 

As others said - reverse is too tall and it's easy to smoke the clutch if you're not careful. If I'm backing up a trailer I switch to 4lo.

 

You have to get the Sport AC for the long bed.

 

DO IT... I have 3 months and 1600 miles on my new MT OR and I am loving it... do not look back.....just do it.

 

None of the manual transmissions made in ANY truck I've driven in the last 20 years are geared properly in 1st or reverse. It makes it MUCH more difficult to move trailers or maneuver in tight spots. Especially in reverse. Backing a trailer uphill is darn near impossible unless you resort to low range if you have a 4X4.

Off road you have much more control going up hills with an auto. Much more control going down with a manual. While 1st isn't geared low enough, it is geared lower in manuals than auto's. Putting an auto in 1st, even low range 1st going down hill doesn't provide enough engine braking. Manuals do a better job going down. But unless you always drive down hills this is a wash. In the long run you go up as much as down.

An automatic will go 400,000 miles with no issues and no ATF changes. You're gonna replace a clutch, or 2 to get a manual that far.

 

Only one: heavy traffic

 

569 miles and I am getting used to it. Coming from an 06 civic, this feels different. I am still trying to find the sweet shift points on this guy, especially from 1st to 2nd.

You lose crawl control but gain ATRAC

The MT and 4.30 gears work very well in this truck. It drives completely different than the AT.

The accumulator is annoying but that’s a $15 fix.

Find yourself a MT and you’ll keep it forever. Getting rid of my 16 auto was one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

 

1 to 2 does require a touch. but it also requires a decent ECU tune. i recommend finding your ECU version to see that you are current.

where do I find out? Truck was made in July this year, so there is a high chance it has the most current version on?

 

that hasn't shown as consistent. i recently saw a report here of a 19 truck with software from my truck's year, '17. maybe ask about the details in the MT thread, well there's a few...
