I've been researching for days now to find some kind of answer or solution to this annoying thumb/clunk after i release the brake pedal. So if im at stop light i have the brakes pressed when its time to go i release brake pedal with out even giving it gas they a clunk sound and feeling its annoying.

heres the details.i have a 2003 tacoma trd double cab 4x4 automatic. Just yesterday i installed brand new calipers rotors and pads did that tundra upgrade. the frame was replaced last year so the leaf springs are brand new so i dont think its an axle and wrap the LCA are oem new. I took the drive shaft off and greased all the fitting. Its still does that clunk after i release the brakes.

if anyone has info that would be great

    Sounds like axle wrap.

If it feels like it's coming from the rear or like someone's tapped your bumper from behind, then it's axle wrap

Probably, yeah. Once you let go of the brakes you release some of that pent up tension on the springs/axle and you get a little clunk/thud.

These springs are probably just more worn out than your other truck's springs.

Oh if it's coming from the front then yeah it's gotta be something else. I had axle wrap in my last Tacoma pretty bad and it felt like getting lightly rear ended.

Without hearing it seeing it I can only guess but first things first, I would go through and tighten up all your suspension bolts up front and make sure nothing is loose and moving around.

I had a really bad clunking/scrubbing noise coming from my front end every time I braked on my 04 recently, for a long time I thought it was my brakes. Turns out it was my LCA bushings...braking put extra load on them and caused them to make a lot of noise. Wasn't a clunk I could feel though, only one I heard.

Haven't replaced them yet but in the mean time, I can get the noise to go away if I douse the bushings in silicone spray.

Crappy aftermarket calipers? I mean, this wasn’t happening before the calipers right? My right front was hanging up and it did exactly what you describe.

What kind of grease did you use on the slip yoke spline in the drive shaft. My truck had a similar sound till I thoroughly cleaned and greased the spline with a synthetic moly grease. The splines are very heavily loaded and can bind without an extreme pressure grease.

See my post again. I added an edit with more details and a link off Amazon. You don't need this large of a size container. They sell a smaller size tube.

A guy on Amazon for this grease left this review:

"Fixed the clunk on my 2003 Toyota Tacoma.
By Peter M on Dec 04, 2018 If you have a clunk coming from the driveline of your Toyota Tacoma, you need this grease. Whenever releasing the brake pedal or accelerating from a stop, a clunk would emanate from the rear of my truck. The cause was the driveshaft slip yoke binding and snapping in and out of position. I tried 3 different "approved" greases and still had the binding issue. One application of this teflon-based grease and the clunk is history. It might seem expensive, but you'll be so glad you got it. Trust me!"
