since a TSB is NOT a recall notice, can owners be charged for a TSB after their factory warranty has expired?

It depends on the TSB, some have a time limit, others demand stock vehicle....

When I did wrench, there were 2 types the internal resolution ones, that detailed checks and parts for repair/ replacement and the 50/50 ones where a valve cover or oil pan is replaced, but the oil is not covered.

By now there are probably 10 types.... damn tech.

It would nice if owners were notified of available TSB’s for their vehicle, but I’m sure that could potentially open a can of worms for dealerships.

The problem is, a TSB does not apply to every vehicle. You can have two trucks that came off the line the same day, and one may have the symptoms a TSB covers, the other may not.
That is why owners do not get notified of one. When a customer brings their vehicle in and they complain of a certain issue, at that point the dealership can run the VIN to see if there are any TSBs that may apply. A good dealership will anyway.

This is exactly what they did with mine. At 5,000 miles I complained about missing from 40-50mph when it first got into the overdrive gears (5th-6th) and not completely warmed up. The tech applied TSB 0058-18 and I haven't had the stumble since.

Depends on the TSB and also if you have it documented with a dealer that you brought it in for the same issue most dealers will perform the tsb for free

I was surpised to learn that NHTSA.gov now has full TSBs linked. The last time that I remember, they only listed TSB titles and full Recalls and Service Campaigns.

    -- Go to the site
-- Do a Vehicle search, not VIN.
    -- Click on Manufacturer Communications.

I got 142 listed for mine. Some of the 142 are internal check notifications, not full TSBs.

Just make sure the vin correlates with the TSB. There are a bunch for the 2nd gen, my vin is not one of the affected.

Good point. I'm just thrilled that we can see the full documents. But, actually reading them is important.

It does depend but one thing I will say in my experience - the dealer demanded that the issue be replicated and logged in their system (versus doing it just because my VIN was in the range). I had this happen with my secondary air injection pump. The truck basically goes into limp mode and only at that point would the dealer do it for free provided it was within the time limits. I had to get my shop, who previously cleared the codes so I could actually go over 40 mph and drive safely, to send over an invoice stating the codes (P2442 I believe). Then the dealer applied the TSB free of charge as this one is 10 years and 150,000 from in service.

The Takata airbag recall is to be final at some point in 2020. This is to include any vehicles yet to identified and those already identified.

As of now the Tacoma is NOT listed, last time I visited the dealer the recall had TBD after the Tacoma......

Takata - its affecting many, many different makes and models of cars. If I recall correctly, moisture is getting into the units and causing some to go off without warning and/or malfunction.
