The problem with hill assist is that it isn't perfect, nor necessary. It holds too long, and seems to be holding at the same force, regardless of hill size or load. I can time it much better with the "redneck" hand brake, and I can modulate how much force to use, instead of fighting against hill assist, when I'm ready to go.

The manual off-road does not have crawl control, but it does have a-trac (aggressive traction control) - works well.

It does not have the JBL audio

The big thing with the stick, is the v6 doesn’t have much oomph below 2k, so you’re gonna end up slipping the clutch more than you’d like to get things moving at altitude.

Reverse is way too tall too! That’s my biggest gripe

The shifter vibrates constantly and rattles too.

The wonky v6’s stumbles and random power surges coupled with the accumulator will make it seem like it’s your first time driving a stick sometimes

The manual off-road is rated for 20 highway vs what like 24 for the sport automatic?

The manual off-road doesn’t have hill-hold, for some reason.

Technical low-speed off-roading (Moab, etc) is a bit of a pain.

But it definitely increases the fun factor!

That's interesting. Every auto trans I have ever encountered needed a rebuild after less than 80K miles. And nobody talks about how you can't bump start an auto without pushing it to 25+ MPH with another vehicle.

Thanks anyway, but I'll keep my stick.

I timed hill assist in my 2019 this AM, its about 1.5 seconds.

I can think of many situations where hill assist would have come in handy. Like pulling a trailer uphill in slick conditions. This was after reaching the top circa 1992:
    Project113.jpg

or on the altamont or grapevine in bumper to bumper uphill traffic. Dumbasses like to tailgate others in stop n go uphill traffic. It's still better to have it.

What other manufacturers. Ram is ok for 2 years, gm quality has been declining steadily for years

I agree with others. I was a diehard manual driver for 35 years. Only bought one car with an auto (because manual wasn’t an option), yanked it and installed a T56 six speed. When I bought my first travel trailer, I towed it with a Powerstoke 5 speed. It wasn’t fun towing a trailer. So my Tacoma is the first auto vehicle I purchaed as I tow a small travel trailer.

Bump start an auto? How is that possible, when the clutches need hydraulic pressure to engage and the pump that creates the pressure it driven by the engine through the torque converter?

The gm did alright mechanically. The interior fell apart easily. Things such as the 20 push pins you need to take out on the plastic to change a headlight sucks.

The guys running utility work still like their rams. Most are walk in caps with 1400 lb welders and gear. Running all year in the north east

as someone whos a parts specialist at an auto parts store and sells clutch kits among many other parts, and yes, many for toyotas, some of these less than educated comments are hilarious.

My best friend is at 210k on a 1995 ranger with original clutch. Its been slipping for 50k, still gets him where he needs to go, which is 150 mile round trip commute to work everyday for the past six years.

All in all, its very subjective, but under responsible normal driver conditions, automatics are undisputably better in almost every regard since the mid 2000s. Find me a modern sports car that offers more than one manual option, and see if theres even one on the lot. Dual clutch automatics are the future, screw the CVT.

Want a reliable, minimal maintenance, minimal effort drivetrain that will beat most manual drivers mileage? Auto. Yes, theres granny drivers that can eek out an mpg or two with a stick shift, but im getting 23 in a lifted taco with 33s and a 4spd auto 4cyl. Aint many with a stick who can touch that unless they stay under 1500rpm, and brother i hammer my truck.

Thank you for the great Friday laugh.

I owned a DCT for a couple years, 2017 Hyundai Tucson Limited. Loved it but it was the worst shifting auto transmission my wife and I ever drove, wife became afraid it was going to get her killed. Numerous trips to the dealer and just like all the Hyundai forums stated they could not fix its surging/hesitation issues in 1st when taking off.

    http://hyundaiproblems.com/dual-clutch-transmission/

Sold it and bought a Camry, now that has a real auto transmission. Don't know why Toyota can't get their AT right in the Tacoma?

As for the DCTs future, it's uncertain in the US so you are full of it.

    https://www.autonews.com/article/20...g-dual-clutch-transmissions-lose-favor-in-u-s

The new C8 Vette has a DCT, it might be alot better than the Hyundai, Ford and BMW DCTs. Hyundai discontinued the DCT for the 2019 Tucson and went back to the CVT.

As for clutch life I towed trailers in my little ole 85, 4 banger 5spd MT and never had an issue. I did change the clutch at 250K only as a precaution and the disc still had plenty of life left. I sold it at 286K miles.89Idaho.jpg

Does the MT have the TSS crap? Its says standard on Tacoma on the web site but wishful thinking has me hoping not. I wish you could still buy a truck with a key and clutch that doesn't hit the brakes for you and turn your high beams off.

Your dct losing favor article is nearly five years old. Get with the times?

You got lucky with 250k on a clutch. It’s extremely rare considering the quantity of manual drivers, where you are one of a ridiculously small percent of lucky stories.

Also, your first point lost me as soon as you said Hyundai. Literally a garbage vehicle.

Better get assisted entry ramps too since I’ve never known a 70 year old woman to want any truck...
