What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

If you cut off the bolt heads, won't the sliders just fall off? Or am I not understanding what you're asking...?

My guess is that if you installed the sliders and then took your truck to a metal fabrication shop, they could do the welds in a few minutes; and likely cost ~$50

 

What part of I don't have the know-how did you not understand? It's obviously not just about welding... Lol! I didn't think that one all the way through. That idea of cutting off the bolt heads was one of the times when common sense wasn't so common.

I've actually been wanting to learn how to fabricate my own stuff, so I might just get the welding tools and learn to weld it myself. Or spend some bro time with my friends, borrow their equipment and ask them to show me how to weld. ...perhaps pay them with some libations and bbq and cash money for materials I may use up of theirs.

I really enjoy fabricating & welding my own stuff! It really is pretty sweet seeing what you can design and build, all with your own hands; particularly as your skills increase.

I started out with a friend teaching me in his shop--I think that's how most of us get our feet wet with it. He grabbed some mild steel from his recycle bin and showed me what to do, what to look for, how to setup the machine, etc. We traded welding classes for helping him cut down trees on his property. I was hooked, and ended up taking classes at the local community college.

I look forward to having my own shop one day--I have a growing list of projects!

 

IMHO. I think that you need to stay far away from anything that puts out 5000* flame! IMHO.

 

Hahaha... I actually work at a resistance welding business. ...but I do accounting! On the dl, I've used the shop machines to drill and cut some parts of the Front Runner Outfitters bed rack to make it work on the DiamondBack HD cover I use on the bed. Not formally trained, but I was a studio art major in college and took a sculpture class where we did get to use some machines for our projects. I just never learned to weld in that class. Also, some of the handymen we hire at the apartment building the wifey and I manage taught me some stuff, but again, just not any welding. I think I should take some welding classes, too. I like working with my hands vs. working with numbers. Then again, it may be good to just learn and grow in working with both.

 

You should take the time one day. I'm no professional by any means, i took the time to fiddle with it and bug a guy who was a professional.

He took the time to answer questions and give suggestions. I've become a decent tig and stick welder. I do recommend practicing a lot before welding on your vehicle. Also understand that welding on your frame will remove any coating from the inside and will be a spot where rust can form.

Also remember that welding on your frame will cause metal fatigue. If not done correctly.

 

Please help. First off I bought my Tacoma about a week ago. And I won’t receive it until next week Thursday or Friday due to me being a paraplegic and having to have the truck outfitted with hand controls and a lift for me.

So As you can guess I have an obvious height problem. I can’t reach the top of the cab so here’s my question. Does anybody have any ideas of a low rack system to put on the bed? I wanna be able to add anything to the bed but also have a spot to put stuff like the spare tire and other gear. I also need to be able to use the bed cover that came with the truck. It’s a soft cover by I believe tyger or something like that. I need to be able to use the cover to keep my chair dry when I transport my whole family. Like under the cover in the bed.

So I was already have the controls and lift for me to get into my Tacoma. The question is does anybody know of a rack system. I need a low rack so I can haul around beach gear, scuba gear, sandy crap and skydiving chutes that haven’t been deployed yet it’s nice to have your chutes in a rack after they are inspected since once they are thrown into the bed of a truck or inside a truck after inspection by another jumpmaster. They must be re inspected once they become out of the eye sight of that jumpmaster. Since I usually have to drive over to the aircraft to load up but I can get harnessed up in the bed.

Yeah I think I would spot weld the threads sticking out past the nut instead of welding on the frame.

Any time. Have some left over so if you need a few after the install just shoot me a pm and I'll put them in an envelope and mail them to you. Just make sure when you reinstall the sail panel you take the clips off the door and place on the panel before pushing them back in. If you don't do it that way they may push all the way through the inside door panel and fall down through a black hole and disappear. Ask me how I know.
