I myself do not understand the science behind oval speakers, but heard they are better at reproducing bass frequencies, as compared to circular speakers.

What are the true differences between 6.5-inch versus 6x8-inch speakers (beside their shape)?

they are better at bass because they have a larger cone surface to move more air. Now most 6.5" speakers can perform as well as many of the 6x9s, but really its just a larger cone. Its like a 10" sub vs a 12" sub... larger cone more bass.

Now i can get into may other factors that will help a speaker perform better but i will just leave it at just a larger cone to move more air. I would say go to your local cartoys and go into their sound booths and listen to their speakers. Compare and contrast features and price points and go from there.
