Hey all, first time posting on here but been reading the forums for a while.
I am buying my first tacoma, and indeed my first vehicle over $4,000. I am looking currently at a 2015 SR5 access cab manual I4 with 76k miles on it. They were asking $18999 and after all the dealership crap they had in there it came out as just over 20k. I walked them down to an out the door price of 1900, but I think I can get them to go lower on it. It originally sold for $23,000 from the factory.
Downsides to the truck are surface rust on the undercarriage, and the paint is pretty jacked up from someone offroading it.
My goal here is 18k out the door, and they fix the paint, or 17k and I take it as it. What's your thoughts on this?

    Sounds like a solid plan.

Research KBB and NADA for the exact year, model and condition. It might help understand where the dealer might be at...

I would focus on the rust and paint and make it seem like they're trying to rip you off :D.

Good Luck and welcome to TacomaWorld:thumbsup:

It must be a bare bones truck if it sold new for 23k. Does it have an engine?

Rust = runaway. Might be some hidden rust you can’t see. Not worth the hassle

I live in Maine so unfortunately rust is a reality for us, there's no getting around it. Unless its a summer classic, everything's got rust.
Focusing in on the paint is a good idea, and yes it has an engine lol

I wouldn't worry about the surface rust too much. My truck is a 2013. Exposed to salt from beaches all year and winter salt. No rust anywhere to be found. However, if you aren't set on a 2015 I'd look for a 2013 and get more truck for the same money.

The biggest issue is the 13's are just as uncommon as the 15's with low miles and often they command similar prices. 5 years old vs 7 years old is not a huge difference for many sellers. I am strictly curious if this comes across as a good deal, standard deal, or a bad deal. Since I live in Maine, my options for buying vehicles can absolutely suck since the only major dealer location near me is in the Mass area and driving 2.5-3 hours to check out a truck eats my entire day up. I can wait for a better deal if this isn't a particularly great buy which, judging from many of your reactions, is what leads me to believe it's just ok since nobody is telling me to run away from it and nobody is telling me to snatch it up asap

Thank you guys for all the help! I have a feeling I'm going to be on here quite a bit

Looks okay from the photos. But unfortunately most vehicles do. Price still seems to be on the high end for a 4 cyl. which could be why it hasn't sold as of yet.
It sucks to have to spend a whole day to look at a vehicle that you might not even buy. But a tank of gas is cheaper than buying someone else's headaches. It's worth it in the end:thumbsup:

    Keep us posted .

    All welcome to TW !!!:D

3 owners for a 4-5 year old vehicle? Check the Carfax.

Yeah, $18k for a base 4x4 seems high, check prices in like a 250 mile radius.

Oh, it’s a base model..... barebones.. access cab, Manual, 4 banger... dude, that’s as barebones as you can get....and it has high miles for a 2015.... definitely overpriced. Offer $12k or offer $15k with 200k/10year bumper to bumper warranty included.

I never knew they sold Tacomas THAT bareboned

Also, 3 owners in 4 years? Smells fishy.
