I was taking off my mudflaps getting ready for a trail tomorrow and I screwed myself pretty good. I locked my wheels at full left cock when I turned off the truck and now I cannot get the ignition to turn or unlock the wheel at all. I felt it seize up when I shut it down and immediately had that "oh shit" that didn't feel right. Sure enough, I've tried everything.
    • I've used the button to put the transmission in neutral
    • I used a floor jack to lift up the front end and get tension off the tires
    • I've cranked both directions on the steering wheel while attempting to turn the key
Any other thoughts or ideas? I'm sitting here with my truck half out the garage feeling like a real jackass.

Do you have any other keys? Try unloading the tension on the steering while jiggling.

A fresh valet key will turn the ignition much easier.

I did try the spare key, nothing moving. It's not a valet key or anything, just a regular spare.

When mine has gone really stuck like that I usually have to jerk the wheel pretty hard back and forth while trying to turn the key at the same time to get it to release. Edit: to be clear, I'm not talking about pulling hard in a direction like continuous tension, I'm talking about literally jerking it creating some shock loads.

This just worked, LOL. I went out and just started banging and yanking the wheel back and forth like I was throwing a fit on it. Then I tried the key again and it released with just a little bit of torque on the steering wheel. Man, I've had it lock up before, but never like this. Thanks for all the ideas guys.

I did the same thing 2 days ago and thought I was SOL but kept trying to turn the wheel while jiggling the key eventually she broke free, what a relief cause I was in the boondocks. really thought id break the key but think I got a slight bend in it now. if you have 2 people 1 turn the wheel and the other jiggle start the ignition, that way you got 2 hands on the wheel for better tension release

Glad you got it unstuck. And same - once in a while it'll lock at just the right point where I really have to pull on it to release, but just a few weeks ago and one other time it just would not come loose and a little extra 'frustration' force did it.

You have to turn the wheel first before turning the key
