Today I cleaned the throttle body and MAF sensor. Then replaced the rusted out battery holder with a rubber one. $5 at AutoZone.

I asked the lady at AutoZone about spark plugs and she says the stock plugs for a 2010 V6 are "double platinum". I thought they were copper ones? Not sure which ones to get.

 

She's trying to upsell you on something. "Platinum" is supposedly an 'upgrade' to copper (and 'double platinum' an upgrade to both). I just get Denso copper plugs at the dealer (which were $23 for the six last time). The great and powerful wizard of internet will tell you that:
1) your truck came with Denso in one side and NGK on the other, copper plugs
2) yes you need to replace it with both kinds (just kidding, it was some manufacturing agreement, the dealer will give you and will put in six of the same kind, probably Denso)
3) get copper because they're what the engine was designed for and there's no reason to pay the premium for iridium when you're going to replace them at the same mileages anyway
4) don't get iridium because it could potentially fuck up the engine
5) iridium is fine I've run them in my truck since the first change and nothing has ever gone wrong
6) the part number/spec is in the manual, just use what it says and don't listen to some idiot behind the counter in an autopart store or on the internet

 

The way I understand it (and I fully acknowledge that I know nothing and could be wrong) is that copper plugs work better and are what the engine was designed for and shipped with. Platinum plugs work almost as good and last a lot longer.
If that's correct, I have no problem using copper plugs and changing them every 30k as it's a super easy change on the 4L.
The wife's Sienna on the other hand, uses Platinum and it's a damn good thing as the three rear plugs are a collosal nightmare to change.

 

I just went on a 30 mile drive and it definitely runs better now. Not that it was filthy but the throttle body needed to be cleaned.

 

There's only one way to go.

When talking spark plug coatings. Nickle<Platinum<Iridium. Why is one better? Only life expectancy. General service intervals 30k<60k<120k miles. Do the math to see what you feel best suits your needs. There can be some theory to kernel development, be real though, these are just stock engines. So buy plugs based on service life and/or manufacturer specifications. I only run standard plugs on my 4.0l.

For someone that doesn’t get in the mountains much I’ve never noticed my engine temp running over 1/2 on the thermostat. On a trail this weekend I noticed it at 3/4 and it was making me sweat a little. Is that normal? (Unfortunately I don’t know the actual temp, so that’s not too helpful. Here’s a photo from Argentine where I didn’t notice the temp rising).
