So Im in the process of buying another tacoma... (ive owned a 2004, 2006,2007 and 2017 so im familiar with all models and generations. Ive found a few (in colorado) both same trim dcsb trd off road im interested in. first is a 2015 with 61k on it salvage title for $20k... small rear end accident but in pristine condition... second is a 2016 with 91k on it clean title for $26k ive been going back and forth which is a better deal and which ill be happier with (i know is subjective) just curious what everyones opinion is between these two trucks. Thanks in advance.

Personally I wouldn’t touch a vehicle with a salvage title.

Unless you know exactly what to look for / what you’re talking about don’t buy a salvage title. Just look at all the hacks on YouTube. What’s worse 1/2 of them even think they know what there doing and giving you a decent vehicle when in fact they are completely clueless.
Nothing wrong with salvage done correctly, but you should get it checked out by a reputable mechanic if you don’t have the skills / equipment to do it yourself.
BTW. 20k for salvage title 2015 seems high.

What is it specifically about the 2016 model that would make it a no-go?

Miles mainly... I’ve seen full build sheet on the savage and it was a very minor rear ending. I like the drivability of the 2nd gen but the usability of the 3rd gen. I don’t drive a ton either

I’ve had salvaged titles, nothing wrong if fixed right and if your in it for the long run. I would try to get the price down. As far as the 16, not crazy about the miles but wouldn’t be afraid of the year. That’s what I have and no issues.

I mean your willing to consider paying 26k for a truck with almost 100k miles on it but tight now you can get a brand new trd offroad for 32 to 33k. I'd steer clear of that salvage title.

Those miles for those prices?! Yes they hold value but nope. Big reason I bought new one when my 08’ was totaled. I got 19k for a truck with 117k miles on it. Would I have paid that for it? Not a chance. Would I pay that for either of those trucks. No. High miles is subjective to the previous driver and you don’t know how either of those were driven.

Prices ARE outrageous everywhere but especially in Colorado. I’ve been looking on this site and the prices on here all over the country are ridiculous what people think a truck with 125k miles is worth. So if anyone out there has a reasonably priced Tacoma let me know I’m a buyer cash in hand

It's the first year of the 3rd gen and historically having the most problems.

Small accident does not equal 'salvage' on a '15. Something's up. Check with your insurance carrier, some won't write a salvage vehicle.

And salvage vehicles are worth about 1/2 of average retail as well as a smaller niche to sell to. Which is not a problem, as long as you pay appropriately and have appropriate re sale expectations.

Since you've owned the 2 gens you are comparing, seems like you'd be better at answering than most. Especially since, as you say, it's subjective.

Pretty sure if I could only afford 20k, I’d go 2WD, wait longer and save more. If you can’t afford more then that then you can’t afford potential maintenance on a 100k + mile vehicle.

Has anyone here ever ran across a honest used car salesmen?? Because I sure as hell haven't. If he's a dealer that means he probably bought the truck from an action which means he is already into it big because salvaged Toyota's are expensive, him doing the repairs at his own dealership means he probably cut every corner possible to keep the cost down and the profits up. There's nothing wrong with a salvage repaired correctly, and everything wrong with one done poorly. Say 3 months down the road you notice your rear tires are getting choppy or you have a tracking issue, the money you saved just went out the window, and you are now stuck repairing a truck with no trade in or resale value. First year anything is always something you want to steer clear or, give the manufacture a year or two to work out the bugs.
