This one has leather and stitched (Not fake stitch) and soft touch material most everywhere, including dash, doors. Way better than the PRO

Mostly body is the part that worries me. Lots of opportunities for issues with fit and finish.

Also, I'm pretty desensitized to journalism awards. You can never be sure of their motivation or funding and the results are suspicious at best.

Did I just stumble into a Chevy commercial? Lol. OP, I think it's odd you're cross shopping a Z71 Silverado And a Tacoma Pro. Two very different trucks. I think this is less about helping you decide and more an exercise in pointing out Toyota's inflated pricing. People pay a premium for Toyotas due to reliability (real or perceived) and resale, which always gets the domestic crowd a little butt hurt. If I could get both trucks at the same price and I didn't need a full size then I would buy the Tacoma for the reasons I just stated. Agreed the Tundra is ugly but that new Silverado isn't winning any beauty contests, I actually think it's the ugliest fullsize out right now and it will carry that torch until its bigger brother hits the streets. Chevy missed the design mark on the 1500 and the new HDs are absolutely the ugliest truck ever made. I just got out of a Silverado and you're kidding yourself if you think that new Z71 will be as reliable or hold resale value as good as anything Toyota makes.

Depends on what you want the truck for. If I was going to seriously offroad, I'd buy a Taco. If I needed a full size for towing and whatnot, I'd probably buy a GM.

I probably wouldn't buy someone's modded truck, and I don't see the point in forking over the extra money for a Pro.

I think most people agree on the Silverado redesign being ugly, it fell from the #2 best seller to #3 as the Dodge Ram passed it.

He didn’t say make it a Pro. He said build an OR the way you want it. If you’re going to make it a Pro, just buy a Pro. If you want the power and speed get the Z71. If you plan to keep it long term I would get the Pro for reliability and resale.

They turned the new Silverado into a Tundra anyway - so go for it!

Actully, I was going to a Tundra because I may need a V8 for towing down the road, but the Toyota problems I have been reading about is a little disconcerting.

Meh. Every company puts out junk every once in a while. Find the reliability ratings of 1-2 year old vehicles, find the model that sucked the least, and go find a gently used one. The previous owner will have taken care of the initial depreciation and time-sucking warranty repairs for you.

Chevys suck I had 3 in 4 years at my old company.

First was a 13 2500HD the thing ate tires (every 25-30k) and always needed alignments. Headlights burnt out every other month. Spent a few weeks in the shop for electrical issue causing new batteries to die 3-4 days after replacement.

Next was a 16 with the 5.3. Drove nice, still needed alignments all the time. Tires (duratracs) would last about 50k. Would do weird electrical errors occasionally, typically when hitting water at high rates of speed. Would cause service stabilitrac error codes and service trailer wiring to come on. Pull power from battery & it would reset.

Last was an 18 with the 5.3. Tranny went at 53k. Fluid pump failed. My faith in GM went when the tranny failed. Most of my driving was highway.

Fast forward, had my 18 Tacoma with 3.5 and manual trans for 13 months. 83k trouble free miles. 82k of them while rolling at 5800lbs. Change the oil every 10k, all diffs & tranny at 50k. Should be able to get 70k out of my duratracs.

Compare the TRD Pro and Z71 interiors. The Chevy interior looks like they ran out of money and slapped something together on the cheap. Could you really get behind the wheel and have to look at that dreadful interior every day?

Interesting consideration. I grew up a Chevy truck guy because my dad owned an C/10 pickup with a manual shifter on the steering column. He still has it sitting behind his garage. Fast forward to my dad’s last truck purchase, a 1998 Silverado Z71, I was on top of the world when he let me drive it home from the dealership as a high school student! Unfortunately, his Z71 suffered from a widespread transmission issue and he’s always complained about issues with alignment. Also considering the myriad of issues that plagued my first truck purchase, a 2000 S-10, I chose to avoid purchasing a Chevy truck and opted for the Tacoma based on its small/sporty truck appearance, reputation for reliability, and value. I’m confident Chevy has gained in reliability since 1998, but my bias is for the Tacoma.

It seems you’re set on paying a higher price tag for the Silverado as well as paying for suspension modifications. If you go that route, but later opt out and trade Silverado, you’ll lose quite a bit. On the other hand, if you buy a TRD Pro, but later opt out and trade it, you won’t lose nearly as much.

Not sure why you’re comparing A top off-road Tacoma to a Luxury Chevy. You should probably be looking at the LT Trailboss if you want a more direct comparison.

It’s also not all about towing vs off-roading. The interior of a Tacoma can be a bit cramped if you regularly have more than 2 people or like to haul your gear in the cab. Full size crew cab trucks have massive amounts of room inside.

Anytime you mod yourself, it is a crapshoot on getting your money back. When I see people on here telling me to not get the PRO and get the OR and mod it the way you like. What is that? Same thing but worse. To me, why would I mod the hell out of an OR to "make it the way I like" when the PRO, IS the way I like.

The Z71 is just a small 4 inch BDS lift. Not much money.
