Tailgate Key Question

Just a followup on this. I purchased the lock cylinder kit at the dealer today. It includes the door cylinder, tailgate cylinder, glovebox cylinder, 2 remote keys (just the key not the fobs) and the "tailgate" key. It was $275 and they wanted another $400 to install it. I installed all 3 cylinders myself in less than an hour with a torx driver and slot screwdriver. The dealer was way overcharging for this one!

 

Unless you contracted with each of those service providers, I would think the onus is on the company that you did contract with to do the work. It's their problem if something else happened while in the care of others. Of course an attorney might be needed to help them see that is how it should go.

 

2016 key is different, 2017 and up keys are identical. If you want a quick fix (until you can re-key the locks) simply disconnect the lock to the door latch. That way you can still use the fob to open but not the key.

 

Wow, that’s a lot cheaper that I expected for 3 cylinders and two keys.

 

Me too. I was pleasantly surprised.

 

My followup: I called a locksmith, and they cannot make a new key from the VIN. I would have to physically get a key code from the dealer after showing ID and proof of ownership, and then the locksmith could cut the key. I called the dealer from whom I bought the Tacoma, and they can at the parts counter make me a new key while I wait, since they have the codes right there and a key making machine. I will stop by on the way home and get two keys made.

PS: followup question: what is the cheapest and easiest route to get a spare electronic fob made and programmed?

 

The key fob works with every thing on my 2016 SR5. Door, tailgate, glove box and ignition. Texas truck, 10-15 build date.
