Is 3 weeks plenty of time?

I had a guy from my company that gave me a copy of the test questions with answers as well as the study book. I need to start diving into the material.

More than enough. It's really rather easy...one of those rare areas where the payoff is greater than the amount of work involved.

It took me 10 days to get to 90% consistently using just lunch and bathroom breaks using website. It's multiple choice and there are only x hundred question pool.

The baofengs are capable of transmit and receive, however you're not legally aloud to transmit without a license. I recommend getting one just to have even if you're planning on getting a dedicated mobile rig. It never hurts to have a handheld available. They are cheap and if you're anything like most of us, you've spent more money on stupider things.

The book is a good resource to have and will explain the how's and why's, but honestly if you're crunched for time you can just memorize the questions and answers. The current test bank is always available on the ARRL website. Keep redoing the questions till you get most of them right.

I went with the "HAM Radio School" kindle edition and app. Stu is a local Monument professor and retired USAF guy. Between the App and the book (not actually needed but GREAT...esp the kindle edition as you can search for questions and many other things)...I was ready to go within a couple of days. Kept studying for the week and the test was a BREEZE! The app is really nice as it tracks your progress and has a wealth of info!

As others have stated...get your tech license...it is easy with some cramming and gets you in the door. I also think once you get your license and start talking on the air you might find you are interested in getting a mobile rig. I have a Yasue FTM400 setup in my taco and use APRS a ton now. (a bit advanced for you just learning but you can essentially transmit your position if you are in range)....I was actually able to send the location of our campsite near Kenosha pass without having cell reception just based on APRS....

For CB? I thought you didn’t have to be licensed for CB.

Thanks, yeah I’m just looking for quick cheap comms to meet up with the group. But it seems I’ll be hanging with you until the others get there the 26th. Seems like most are coming the 26th.

Shoot me your cell so we can talk more closer to time but the very first night it just depends on what time we get in town.

I'd just pick a CB that's small and easy to install. Bigger is not better, and you're not going to get significantly better performance on a CB by spending $100 vs $50.

The cobra 75 wx st is a popular CB radio because you can tuck the main unit out of the way just about anywhere, and all the controls are on the MIC. I wouldn't call it cheap though for a CB radio at $140 when a baofeng HAM can be had for less than $50.

    https://www.amazon.com/Cobra-75-WX-...3CD0YS9MVHYV&qid=1567548219&s=gateway&sr=8-15

While I can't speak for it personally, something simple like this will probably do just fine for under $50
