Air Conditioner Dial: Either Full-Blast or Off

I'm having kind of an odd issue with my '06 Tacoma's air conditioning: It's either full-blast or off. When I turn the dial to any of the less intense settings, it stays at full-blast until I get down to the totally-off setting. Granted, this is much better than not working at all, but now I'm either freezing or broiling. Any clue as to what the scoop is?

 

So it blows HIGH Speed on ALL settings?
Usually the problem is that it Blows on High Speed only. No other settings will work.
In that case it is usually the blower resistor.

If it blows high on all speed, I believe something is by-passing the resistor.
As on High speed the resistor is not used.

Either the issue changed or I got it wrong initially. Now it only blows on High. Otherwise it’s off.

Is this something a willing novice can fix or should I put a call into my mechanic?

 

Blower motor resistor.

Its easy to change, but often the connector is burnt as well and requires a new pigtail.

I found a great YouTube video that covers replacing the blower motor control module resistor.

Then I found the

$18 973-582 HVAC Fan Blower Motor Resistor with Wire Harness Replacement for 2005-2020 Toyota Tacoma, Replace# 4P1650, JA1772, RU1435, RU746, 8713804050, 8713804052

necessary replacement parts on Amazon for under $20.

Looks like a pretty easy job, even for a novice like me. Really appreciate the help here.

 

One more thing... the repair video calls for crimp connectors. A quick visit to Amazon shows a bewildering selection of them. Can anyone suggest a good quality set of crimp connectors. I'd probably cheap out on something like this and regret it later, so if anyone has recommendations... One of the videos I watched recommended nylon insulation, but what do I know?

 

If you ordered the kit in the link you posted above from Amazon, it looks like it comes with connector.
They look to be Nylon to me?

Those crimp connectors pictured in the Amazon ad have heat shrink tube over the insulation. Personally, in a high current draw situation like this I would prefer to solder the connection rather than use crimp connectors.

 

Im having the problem with that blows at high speed only. How were you saying I should fix it?

 

In late breaking news... after researching how to fix it and purchasing the necessary replacement parts, the fan seems to be working normally today. What the...

I'm guessing it's a matter of time before it gives up the ghost entirely, but... weird.

 

I can co firm. Blower resistor, thats how mine was. Luckily the dealership replaced that part.

usually, you can wiggle the wires and harness (passengers foot well, above the carpet edge in front of the passengers left foot) and that will clean the burnt connection enough to last a few days till you get the replacement. I wiggled mine two or three times over a few months and managed to delay the part change till it was super hot and humid, just so I could sweat off a few bags of Cheetos...

 

Buy the parts. It's gonna go eventually and you'll need them.
Had the same thing happen to me. Then it went. I cleaned the connections up and it went for a while. Eventually it died at the wrong time (not on the coast in southern california where it's cool but in the Mojave desert). Did a fix job in less than thirty minutes during my first camping stop in Tahoe, back in business. Cost me a bit more because I couldn't Amazon on the road. Had to O'Reilly.

 

Yep, this one is common. I changed the resistor some while back...I forget. Lol. A few days ago it was only blowing on high. A couple of hours later its working on all speeds again. Sounds like time for a new connector.

 

Ok, so did the install of the new parts. Now I have two speeds instead of one. Soooo, close but no cigar. My guess is my first foray into using crimping butt connectors was where I went wrong. So I'm guessing tomorrow I'll try disconnecting the wires and try again.

 

What are the speed that work?
