You know, the day John Deere originated in 1837, our beloved Steve knew he had to have one. Being only 27 at the time, he knew that it would take a huge effort on his part to become a proud owner of one of the green and yellow awe inspiring machines. But our Steve was no dumbass, contrary to what you may have heard. So he formulated a foolproof plan.
Seems as though the Smiths down the street were rolling in the dough due to the fact that their (flock, gaggle, covey, whatever) of blue ribbon winning chickens were out producing the competition 3/1 in grade A large eggs. So our pal Steve decided they prolly wouldn't miss a few if he slipped in there around midnight and grabbed a few for trading purposes at the local general store.
This worked out quite well for a couple of weeks until Lucy, the eldest daughter of the Smiths, caught word of his antics one day at the five cent theater from Frank, Steve's younger cousin. Ole Frank and Lucy had a thing goin on Friday nights down at the frog giggin hole and it seems during his passion build up, why he was apt to say anything.
Anyhow, one night our girl Lucy decided to take matters into her own hands. She loaded up her daddy's musket gun and set sail for the chicken coop just after supper.
After hearing ole Steve enter through the rear hatch, Lucy threw on the lantern and pointed that durn muzzleloader right betwixt his eyes!
Well, Steve let out a holler and ran in place for a full 10 seconds. Totally flabbergasted, Steve quickly apologized to Lucy. Upon seeing Steve in his overhalls and long handles, our gal Lucy decided she might just have some fun. All the neighbors heard ole Steve let out a rooster holler as he and Lucy entwined themselves on the hay covered chicken coop floor.
Later that week, Lucy talked her pa into buying Steve that John Deere he'd always had his eyes on.
