The answer is it depends. Our RAV4 Sport has 130k miles - shocks actually still feel fine and road compliant when I'm driving it alone, and when its literally loaded with the full family+dogs+luggage. No oil leaks either. If anything, its time for new bushings instead of shocks. I'll probably replace LCAs (no UCAs) and shocks at the same time when I have nothing better to do. (our Rav4 is a car I'd like to upgrade btw, but I can't bring myself to trade away / sell a car that is still 95% cosmetically prime, and has zero mechanical issues).

In the Tacoma, the OEM shocks were, and apparently still are pretty terrible. The way that back end scatter dances at highway speed on rough pavement highway is just dangerous in certain scenarios. The original shocks are trash and need an upgrade immediately...it would be a benefit to the owner to replace them as soon as possible so that the 'newness' of the truck can be enjoyed while the bushings are still fresh.

The OP was 8 years ago. He probably doesn't own the truck any longer.

I did end up doing bilstein 5100's when they replaced my frame. But now I have a newer truck and don't have to worry about it.

I just hit 100k mile on my 2013 DCSB Off Road and want to update the suspension. Seems 5100's are the go-to's. Can anyone tell me what front springs to get with these? Are people simply using their existing springs and only upgrading the shocks? I am wanting to keep this truck as close to stock as possible. 2nd part is the rear leafs seem to be relatively flat. Maybe even slightly inverted a degree or two. Do I do anything outside of rear shocks for the rear? Thanks for any help, all new to suspensions and definite answers are hard to come by via search. Lots of lingo and acronyms I am unfamiliar with. Thanks
