do the aftermarket flares give you better clearance than stock flares?

I removed my stock flares, so I can only venture a guess about aftermarket flares, but the answer likely is no, since they use the same attachment points in the wheel well and are actually typically “puffier”. Nobody makes aftermarket flares that are purposefully lower profile.

The rubbing is mostly a problem by the cab mount (rearward in the wheel well) and that is where trimming most often has to happen. Rearward wheel well liner, rearward fender flare and fender trimming. Before I removed my flare, I had to trim my fender flare and fender itself to the point on losing two clips closest to the cab mount. After market flares attach to the same clip points.

The pic below is marking where I had to trim the actual fender, losing two clip locations.

Thanks, that is very helpful. I am just starting to research bigger tires. I have a very moderate lift but could dial it up significantly if required.

That looks wet and slippery. :burnrubber:

How do those ko2’s do for you in this size?

Yeah it sprinkled immediately before I was about to go down that hill (the hardest part of the trail), which meant I slipped some on the rocks and sand.

I really like the KO2, they ride quiet and are aggressive enough, especially when aired down. I do a lot of highway driving too (these tires have 60k miles in the last year and half), so the combination of aggressive and quiet was what I really wanted. I’m starting to off road more and more aggressively. So my next tires may be mud tires?

Most of my driving is interstate as this is my daily driver. I have heard great things about the K02s except that they are really heavy. Those of you with the other options discussed here that are lighter, how is the road noise?

Wow, 60k!! That’s a lot of miles. I have 43 on my 265 ko2’s and looking to go up to 295.

This size is 61 pounds I believe. The cooper xlt’s are 58 pounds. There rest are all significantly heavier. I really like my ko2’s. They’re tough and handle well all around on and off road. I’m wanting to replace my current set of 265’s with 295’s and I’m going with ko2’s again.

I considered the cooper xlt’s because of the weight, but 3 pounds lighter is not enough for me to give up the toughness and reliability of the ko2’s that I’ve come to rely on.

    Ymmv.

Yeah I average 44500 miles a year. Road trips mostly. 295s seem like a great option for a bigger tire. Bigger than the 285s, but don’t need the aggressive trimming and firewall tubbing that 35s need. You can also get away without regearing ( if you don’t care about mpgs)

But... if you are concerned enough about gas mileage that a few extra pounds per tire worries you... don’t bother with 295s. Seriously. Just don’t. Gas mileage goes to hell with 295s. You really should regear with 295s to optimize gas mileage. But then you’ve blown 2 grand or whatever.

Moral of the story is that it’s a truck, not a Prius. And if gas mileage concerns you, don’t go up in tire size.

With my lift and these tires, my steel bumper, roof racks, camper shell, and all the shit I carry around, and my driving style (aggressive and fast), I get 12mpg.

I get 17.5-19 mpg during my 15 mile commute, currently. We’ll see how much that drops once I install the steel ATH bumper and winch though.

It will go down I’m sure. I think my bumper and the roof rack eat the mpgs. So does my constant driving 5-10 over the speed limit. Time is money and I’ve got shit to do. :burnrubber:

Either way, you won’t get close to the sticker rated mpgs with these tires

Only concerned to the point where I need to get 3-400 miles through a desert with no gas stations. So yeah, it’s a consideration.

But doesn’t bother me in the general sense as I actually drive a Prius for my daily. 52 mpgs all day every day, but the real winner is that I don’t have to pull all my skids off every other month to change oils and lube drive shafts. That shit gets old real quick.

Fair enough. Though, having spent plenty of time road tripping and off-roading in the US’s deserts, I would say you’d need durable sturdy tires that in turn weigh a lot. Get the tires you want and an extra jerry can? :notsure:.

Agreed. That’s why ko2’s are my top choice for an all terrain. They just keep taking a beating and have never let me down.
