We have a Wednesday group ride and this is exactly the way we operate. The fast guys at the front always stop and wait for the back of the pack to catch up. When we get back to the parking lot we all break out beers, trade beers, bullshit and cook out. Everyone is welcome and everyone that rides with us is offered a beer and food even if they didn't come with any. Love the Wednesday ride!

OK, now that the OP has got his answer about what those tailgate blankets were for, now what about the those tailgate pillows I’ve been seeing strapped on tailgates or spares on both jeeps and Tacos? JK..

They're on there to keep the spare tire warm so its TPMS doesn't kill the engine due to "Low" pressure.
