First I'll tell you about the truck... It's a 1999, SR5, TRD, V6, manual trans, 4x4. I'm the original owner so I know these are the axles that came with the truck.

I'm trying to replace a ripped axle boot, passenger side. I can't figure out how to get the tripod joint off the axle. Mine doesn't look like the manual or what Timmy Toolman shows in his how to video. There is a clip below the joint not on top. I'm thinking I need to slide that clip down so I can access the clip holding the joint on?? I'm also have no luck getting that clip to slide down.

Any help y'all can give would be much appreciated. 0907191452_resized.jpg 0907191452a~2_resized.jpg

    Reserected from the dead.
How difficult is it to remove the other joint? With the other one gone, you can slide a new boot onto this end.

pop that bottom clip off, then the tripod can slide down, exposing the top clip

    Here you go.

How-to: Rebooting a Tacoma CV Axle

You are at this point in the how-to, and you want to push the roller head up over the snap ring on the top, so you can access the snap ring on the bottom. To slide it up over the top, you sometimes have to move the top snap ring around a bit, so that you can slide part of the roller head over it.

In this photo, the top snap ring is still in place - so you can slide the roller head that far up, in order to get access to the lower ring.

    Thanks.
Wish I had those snap ring pliers instead of the ones I have, it may have been an easier job.

Even if you're done with the job for now, it's definitely worth getting a pair of Stanley Proto J250G Proto 9-Inch Lock Ring Pliers - I've used them on several projects now and they are miles better than what I've found in the parts stores. I literally never have a problem with snap rings now, and the pliers aren't all that expensive either.
