so I’ve got a real delima on my hands need some sound advice. So the front diff went out on my 98 Tacoma awhile back I finally was able to find a new front diff at a junkyard. I’m out working on it and I see my pickup does have the ADD automatic disconnect and I thought it didn’t so I bought a front diff without it. The junk yard doesn’t have one in 4.10s with the add, plus it’s an hour and a half drive. So I’m ready to get this thing in and rolling so I can drive it to work. Does anyone know what kind of problems there would be if I just slapped the one w/o ADD in there. Is it an option or not at all???

Your front diff and driveline would be spinning like it's in 4wd. Not good.

@Eclipse52 there's a market for a front diff in 4.10 with no ADD; in fact I need one (but already bought the manual tube).

If I were you, I'd convert from ADD to manual hubs.

Really, I'd opt for new hubs which are still available from Toyota. I bought an entire spindle/hub/axle setup but will be replacing the hubs with new ones, while I rebuild the one's I'm removing to sell afterward.

From there, you'll want to piece together the rest; IE spindles, wheel bearings, etc. but that's if you're wanting to refresh with new parts.

You can use your current spindles, which will be labor intensive? Not sure but I'd think you'd need a press.

The diff (clamshell) itself is the same. Just swap your ADD tube with actuator onto the non ADD diff you buy.

And don't bother swapping to manual hubs. More unneeded expense for weaker CVs and no noticeable benefits.

I really don't see any functional advantage to manual hubs. Only reason to go manual hubs is that it's a little easier to convert a Pre-runner to 4x4 using manuals. Otherwise, just stick with the ADD.

I would just try and source an ADD diff. It's probably cheaper and easier to get a ADD diff from the yard and re-gear it to 4:10 than it is to mess around with converting to manual hubs.

    Try car-part.com...

Thanx guys. So I called the junkyard they had five diffs on the shelf with ADD so I just went over again! And swapped it out. And gave me 67$ back. Anyways been out working all day got it all together except the parts guy gave me the wrong cv axle I needed because one was bad so I’m all done except that. Plus I needed a new inner tie rod so I’m waiting for that too. Had to add all of the fluids to everything that takes it. Just bought it from my brother in law awhile back and she was neglected. Did some greasing to so she’s about road worthy now. Appreciate the input guys

Just got the original with ADD because it was easier, and they didn’t have manual hubs
