Truck sat for 6 months, should I change oil early?

Hey guys! I bought a brand new 19 TRD OR at the end of June off the dealers lot. The truck was built December of 2018 so it sat for 6 months or so on the lot and had 170 miles on it the day I bought it. No big deal.

My question is about my first oil change. The dealership assured me I should follow the recommended interval of 12m/10k miles from the date of purchase but it got me thinking that the oil has been sitting in it for 6 months before I even bought it.

What do you guys think? Am I ok waiting until June 2019 or 10,000 miles even though the truck sat new for 6 months? Should I do it at 5k?

Dealer is saying wait for 10k or 1 year from purchase date.

0w20 is synthetic and can handle long life use.

That said if you want to shorten intervals there's nothing stopping you. Prior to 2016 Toyotas with

0w20 oil had 5k oil change intervals.

The only thing that has changed is emission standards and lowering of cost of ownership.

 

My ritual; synthetic oil and Toyota filter change at 1k miles, then at 4K, then every 5k miles. Increments of 5 make it easy to keep track of. All oil and filter changes are performed by a local Toyota dealership for warranty purposes.

 

The 10k mile is ok. 5k is recommend for severe service like frequent towing, heavy hauling, frequent short trips. The only way to know for sure how long you can run your oil is to get your oil analyzed a couple times. Personally I'm switching to 5k OCI because of daily driving and not all synthetic oils are design for long drain intervals.

 

It should be fine. I do mostly highway miles and I change mine at 5K, but that's just because I like doing oil changes.

Me personally, i would not wait till 10k miles. I would do it before it hits 8k for sure. Oil is cheap engines are expensive. Might be overkill but it makes me sleep better at night

Not that hard to do it yourself, just have to buy filter cap wrench from auto parts store. The whole process takes about 45 mins and 3 beers.

You really like doing oil changes!

But it does feel like it drives better after an oil change and that great feeling that its done properly.

 

Change at 1k at the very minimum. Then personally, I'd do every 5k after that. Get the "break in" miles on it, then swap out that old oil for fresh. Going 10k between changes seems like a push from manufacturers to get you in a new vehicle sooner IMO, but do your research and make your own decision. Oil is cheap. I'd rather have the piece of mind, but everyone will have a different opinion on the matter.

I tend to baby mine, so I always error on the side of caution.

Do you really think Toyota would recommend 10000 miles or 1 year if it was bad for the engines?
Last I knew Toyota warranties the engine. And if the oil change interval causes engine issues, then Toyota would be fixing a lot of engines under warranty.

But in the end, do what ever makes you happy and can afford.

 

If it just sat in the lot for a couple months and only had that <200mi logged...you are fine. Oil breaks down over time/use when it lubes stuff during the constant explosions within the cyliners.

 

My oil changes have been done at the 10,000 mile interval and there haven't been any issues.

Yes toyota warranties the engine....

Getting them to actually perform that warranty work is a different story

 

Ask the dealer to do the oil as part of the deal. If it has sat for 6 months then there could be contiminants, moisture in there hay you don't to have for a long period of time.

 

After reading some responses I think I’m going to get it done at my 5k mile service coming up in the next few months. Iv got 2k on it now

 

It should be fine. I get my oil changed once a year because it would take me over 2 years to get 10,000 miles.

If you have synthetic oil I would not change the oil, run the truck 10-15 miles to get it hot. I would throw a can of injector cleaner (Sea Foam, STP) in the gas tank.

 

Oil doesn’t go bad from just sitting there. Change every 10k or every year, whichever comes first.
