10000 mile oil change?

$$$$$ is what it’s all about with manufacturers. Few years back when BMW and GM lowered recommended oil change intervals was it because of engineers... yeah right ummm no it was strategic financial move.

 

My 1985 4Runner has a sticker under the hood that says change the oil every 10,000 miles. It was serviced at the dealer from new till 2012 when I got it.

The inside of the valve cover is a caked up mess of sticky black shit and the engine is generally filthy everywhere inside. But it's also got a ton of miles so meh.

In 1985 id have called bullshit on that figure. In 2019 I reckon it will be alright on a motor without a lot of miles and wear. But I probably won't keep this truck long enough for it to matter. I still think it sucks.

I do believe that 10k miles is a long time to go on a break in oil change though, and changed mine at 5000 miles. I also believe that an oil change interval depends more on how the vehicle is used than anything else. Lots of stop and go and short trips need shorter drain intervals in my opinion. The guy that gets in and hops on the interstate for an hour every morning could probably go longer. So use your own judgement.

But it's all just bullshit and dick waving unless you are sending samples to Blackstone and comparing your results. So who cares.....

 

As an engineer who has dealt with marketing people and accountants, I highly doubt it was entirely up to the engineers.

Certainly don't change it less than manufacturers spec, but it wouldn't hurt to get a qualified third party opinion on whether that's actually enough. You won't find that information here.

 

Must be an Engineer, the guys who invented & developed the sticks & spears, ummm, where it all started, weren't engineers.
Abraham Darby & Albert Einstein weren't engineers either, pretty sure life would of been just fine without PE designations..
I worked for almost 2 years on Risk Based Mechanical Integrity for API projects when one day at a lunch my boss introduced me as his youngest promising engineer. On the way back to the refinery after lunch I said, hey Ed, you know I'm not an engineer right.?.
His response, damn, well, you could of fooled me, you're doing a fine job.
Always question, especially over confident engineers.

 

Probably a good idea to change your headlight bulbs every 5k too. Just incase!

 

I’ve got a pile of dog of sh*t in my back yard that brings more to this thread than your post. Having torn down hundreds of engines I’ll stick to my belief that frequent oil changes are a must and not an option.

Changed my oil at the dealer at 5,000 miles and paid 56 bucks that's awfully cheap insurance. Took it back at 10,000 and let them change it on the freebie, I'll change it every 5000. 10000 mile oil changes seem awfully spaced apart even if it is synthetic.

 

Use any API SN or SN Plus rated synthetic motor oil.
People have been getting good results with Amazon's motor oil as well as WalMart's oil.

As a professional mechanic who works on Euro cars and has rebuilt porsche motors you must hate German oil change intervals that are recommened for 20k miles. Not to mention that your experience with Japanese cars must be exceptionally limited as Subaru's are known to burn oil, specifically the Imprezas.

The change interval is based on on viscosity of the oil and how quickly it degrades, not how dirty it gets. Heat kills oil, thats why engines, diffs and transmissions run a heat cycles and break-ins and why under heavy loads and towing more frequent changes are needed because the oil breaks down.

Toyota has determined that a 0w20 is ok for 10k under normal driving conditions and Audi and others have determined that 5w-40 is ok for 20k miles under normal conditions The R8 runs 10w-60 etc.

Toyota builds 2.6 engines - just for a Tacoma - every minute in an eight hour shift. Pretty much every post from people who have over 100K on these engines... with no problems... have went off the 10K changes. Toyota knows a bit more than you.

Wrong. I don’t hate Toyota. Why do you get so ass hurt over an oil change thread, to which you’ve brought nothing but,but,but,but engineers this engineers that. I don’t believe in long oil change intervals it’s as simple as that, but you go in and keeping hugging them engineers nuts. Which as I’ve already pointed out it’s marketing/sales driven.

 

I'm just curious about this. I have a second gen V6 that I change at the recommended interval which is every 5k. If I'm using say Mobile 1, same oil essentially that the 3rd gen uses (different weight I know), why is my change interval half of a third gen? Same oil, is it the engine? I'm not a mechanic or engineer just curious

You don't believe in extended OCI's. Fine. Show me proof in this engine that 5K is better than 10K. You can't. But why stop at 5K? Make it 2.5K or 1K. That's better according to your "beliefs" right?
