RCI fuel tank skid plate

Anybody on here has one of these?
I'd like to know fitment on these.

 

I have one. Fitment is good. Since you have a sport you will need to switch out your straps on the gas tank if you haven’t already.

 

buddy just installed his and fitment is fine. A bit of work to get it on but its sits clean. Also there are limited options for gas tank skids.

 

Yea , limited is right. Not many out there.
Others I have seen aren't solid plate.
It's made public recently that Tacomas have plastic fuel tanks after fuel tank was drilled to steal fuel.

Ours fits with or without the TRD tank straps, but honestly just cut the studs off them because all they do is hang down and get drug through stuff

People have been drilling off-road truck gas tanks forever, it’s nothing new. With our higher trucks it’s just easier to get underneath. Was your tank drilled? My first GEN with steel armor plates was drilled for gas. It was easier to repair since it was a steel tank, these plastic ones will not be as easily repaired.

Skid plates won’t stop gas theft, the sides of the tank are still exposed. Also you have to be careful about collecting rocks and other rough stuff between the plate and the tank. I went through some mud with my RCI plate and noticed a bunch of gritty stuff between the tank and plate which wouldn’t be good in the long run with vibration and stuff. Mobtown also makes a similar plate that’s great for trail protection but probably also has the same issues. That’s probably why the plastic OEM plate has holes in it to help keep it clean. I’m not saying don’t get it, it’s definitely a great idea if you drag your bottom a lot off-roading, it’s just that you’re going to have to maintain it by keeping it clean next to the tank - not a big deal.

If you’re worried about gas theft where you live, one idea would be to put a harbor freight driveway sensor on or near your truck at night, I used a magnet on the back of mine and stick it to the side of my truck and it alerts me in my bedroom if someone is walking around out there. Aim it up about 4-5 feet above the ground so it doesn’t pick up cats walking by. I started doing this when I have to park on the street ever since the night my tank was drilled.

 

Have a 2018 sport with the OEM plastic fuel tank skid plate. Purchased the RCI aluminum fuel tank skid plate but have not yet installed. Read this thread and spoke with RCI today. They stated that my OEM fuel tank straps have the necessary studs and do not need replacement.

Sports don't have a gas tank skid, so they don't have studs on the gas tank straps to mount the skid. Some aftermarket skids (like RCI) require those studs to mount, so you would need to swap your straps to mount those skids.

 

well that's stupid.

 

I have the RCI and I like it. Easy install and it provides better protection than the stock unit.
If you are gonna bash your truck often you might look for a heavier option.

 

did you finish the install? Do you need straps?

 

Cuz they aren’t really needed.

That said, plastics tanks aren’t anything new, my 88 YJ has a plastic tank and drilling through metal isn’t all that difficult.

I think it is. RCI certainly looks the best. And is even the cheapest. Still plenty thick steel

 

I’m running full aluminum RCI skid package and mine bolted right up in minutes. The oem fuel skid is essentially worthless, so I would highly recommend this upgrade.
