Toyota's recommendation in the manual is one thing but the other big things are how awesome your oil filter is and whether you run oil with regular or long-drain interval. My background is in farming and we had dozens of vehicles big and small, gas and diesel. Common strategy for all vehicles was as follows:
    - get a sick deal on a new, high quality vehicle at end of year stock rollover time. You often get crazy deals on the really loaded up ones that no one wanted to buy.
    - check all fluids as soon as you get home. Manufacturers are notorious for filling just enough of every liquid to just barely reach the "low" mark on dipsticks. Top up all fluids.
    - install a magnetic oil drain plug if the vehicle doesn't come with one stock. This collects metal bits on the plug and holds them there for removal at the first oil change.
    - first oil change of the cheap filter and low quality oil at ~3000km. Replace with high-end filter (Wix and others) and Amsoil long-drain interval synthetic oil.
    - the oil and filter cost more, but the longer drain times and fewer oil changes per 100,000km will save money over time.

My 1987 Toyota SR5 went over 800,000km and we had epic longevity out of all of our vehicles with synthetic long-drain oil. I don't know why the "12-month" rule came about... has anyone ever seen a stamp on a bottle of oil that says date of manufacture or an expiry date of when it goes sour like a carton of milk? I once found a case of oil at the back of a shelf that was at least five years old (shipping date). Lab said it was good so we ran it like normal until lab tests said it was done. The tractor running that went 3 years on the same oil because it has to do with contamination levels, not age.

Its because the oil has gas/cyilinder blow by degrades the oil over time , it gets thiner and won't have the film strength on the side walls, we have fire trucks that get less then 600 mile and they change it.
but 1 year is a guide, if i only did 1000 miles a year i would not wait 10 years to change it...
Buy the way i did 5K first then every 10K

That's a good point. If they were as easy as the oil change then I probably would. Since they're way past 10K I really don't think about them. I did flush my brake fluid early though like I always have.
