Bought my 2016 Tacoma use in 2018 of last year and recently saw on a TW about the leaking rear diff case so I took a look for myself. Wanted to confirm with y'all that this looks similar to what others are experience. Service person I spoke with told me the vehicle was fixed April 2018 due to the recall but looks like it wasn't done properly! Taking it in this Saturday but they told me about a $130 diagnosis fee even with the vehicle under warranty.. Any advice would be helpful.

    Thanks!

Go to a different dealer. They are bullshitting you on the 130 diag fee. They do that to discourage people for coming in for stuff they dont wanna deal with. You're covered under warranty and that check should not include any fee. Find yourself a new dealer to go to from now on

That's similar to what mine looked like. Not too bad but was leaking from the seal. They looked at it and did the replacement for me free of charge even without a recall on my vin. They replaced the seal and fluid and torqued the bolts to the new spec. Even gave me a rental car for a day.

I'd say find a different dealer or service manager if they are trying to charge you. This is a warranty item and a recall so there should be no issues. The really bad ones were draining fluid so bad it would pool on the ground. But you probably should get it done to that rear diff just to be safe.

    Best of luck!

Also, they dont need to hook up a damn scanner to tell if there's a leak. This legitimately pisses me off o_O

Think you guys may be correct, I just had the 55k maintenance done and something like this probably shouldn't have gotten past the technician..

Warranty means no fee charged to the customer. Call their BS on that one. Even if it was fixed before, evidently it wasn't fixed properly, and that is not your fault. The dealer can fight with corporate over that.

Interesting how the leaking occurs at the top of the seal as well. I know the fluid gets thrown around inside these diffs, but you'd think 99% of the seeping/leaking would occur on the bottom where it sits and is weighed down by gravity.

I don’t think it’s a leak, I’ve seen other owners have it up top and not on bottom.

My '18 OR is weeping at the bottom. Dealer said it wasn't actually dripping, wouldn't do anything. I asked to send pictures to corporate rep, haven't heard back. I ended up checking the nuts and only the bottom 2 where at factory torque specs. Ended up tightening the 8 lose nuts and I cleaned off the oil residue. Time will tell if it leaks again.

I looked through several threads on here. I believe the following is correct. its been a month since I did it.
    Original 18 ft/lbs
33ft/lbs when they re-install new seal and nuts.
I believe the original TSB was for the sport model rear diff.

I found the bottom two on mine at 33lbs and the other 8 were less to a varying degree. I tightened all to 33ft/lbs.
