2nd Gen PreRunner Dbl Cab - Audio System Overhaul

Recently went out, picked up a gently used 2013 PreRunner Double Cab. I have the non-JBL factory system; its lacking. I'm looking for feedback on what I've came up with and possible improvements within the same price range. Any recommendations on 6x9 & 6.5 adapter plates for the doors? Please feel free to be critical.

Lil backstory, I'm retiring my 02 Tacoma Ext Cab. I had put in the following system into it roughly 10~ years back and it has served me well.

The tweeters you mentioned only work in the 2016+

Swap your front set for the Reference 9630cx and you’re golden!

 

Done, any tips for mounting the Tweeters included with the Ref 9630cx bundle? Are the starfish mounts easy enough? This will be my first go round w/ component crossovers, recommendations for mounting them to the door?

 

The tweeters all mount a bit differently depending on what comes with them. I can’t picture the mounting options the Infinity’s come with but you should be able to make something work pretty easy. I’ve had good results cutting the factory tweeter out of the metal bracket and mounting the new one in its spot. This just needs a fresh razor blade and some tin snips (or deemed or whatever you have that can cut thin metal)

As for the crossover, my usual spot is to zip-tie it to the bottom of the factory wiring running straight across the door. Far enough back that the big foam piece on the door panel won’t hit it. I’ll look for some pics and post them

Right on, I also opted for the RD500 over the JX500. Just looks to be cleaner for all connections.

Have a few questions regarding the

1. With the power pack, is the dash pretty crammed or do I have plenty of room to work with?
2. With camera inputs, can I keep my reverse in the rearview and also have it show on the HU when reversing?
3. Do folks generally leave the USB coming down to the tray/cup holder area or find a clean way to mount it in the multiple slots below the AC? Already looking at running the RBC knob to somewhere up front.

I got these free when I ordered some tweeters. I wasn’t going to use them but it turns out they work great.

I took out the cig lighter for my knob, it took some fabrication, and put USB jacks in place of the switch blanks.

 

1. the dash is tight, but that power pack mounts onto the radio chassis and you’ll have enough room

2. You can splice in an RCA cable into the video signal at the camera connector on top of the fuse box and get the same image on both screens. Factory cam resolution is trash (designed for 2.5” screen, for sure) but it works

3. Search Amazon for “Toyota USB” on amazon and end up with something like this.

But this can create issues on occasion. Especially for android auto.
For that radio, you have to use the included USB cable because it has a 90 degree bend. That means that this new adapter is 3.3’ long and gets plugged into the already 3ish feet long alpine cable. Then your phones charging cable on top of that. You’re at 9’ of USB cable. Sometimes android auto doesn’t like that.

That’s when you just cut a rectangle in one of the blanks like Dolby shows in the previous post. It can look clean, and prevents cable length issues.

 

Any easily obtainable sound deafening material recommended from Amazon, Lowes/Home Depot? I figure if I'm in there might as well take some extra time and do it right.

 

The Noico brand on Amazon seems to be a crowd favorite for the money. Time will tell how it holds up, but many members here have positive reviews. Also can depend on your local climate. Intense heat can cause even some of the high-dollar materials to peel off the door panels. I would definitely make sure to clean the metal pretty good with an alcohol wipe before applying any material.

 

Any of you have experience with the Dash Mount kits? Crutchfield is sending the Metra 95-8235 Dash Kit, but I'm seeing mixed reviews for it being a solid, stable mount. Here on TW, I see favorable reviews on the Scosche kits. Just curious which, if either may be more suitable for my setup.

 

I’m using the Metra kit with my w8400 and it’s plenty solid. With some kits, I take the metal factory brackets off to add support, but I have not felt the need to do that with this kit.

 

Well, I have everything and plan on tackling this tomorrow. Start with the HU, Amp+Sub and start on the front doors sound deadening and new components and finish up with the 6.5s in the rear and sound deadener. Will likely come back and get the rear of the cab fine eventually as well.

With the crossover in the front doors, am I just running the incoming feeding the tweeter into the crossover and then on to the tweeter and 6x9 accordingly?

Question, recommendations on screws for the fiberglass stealthbox? My drywall screws fail, would like to avoid butchering the box more than necessary.

Head unit went in fine, went back and got the brake bypass. Surprised how neutered Alpine makes it.
