Hi everyone. I just bought my first toyota a couple of days ago. Its 1998 toyota tacoma 4x4 4cyl 200000 miles. I am self taught when it comes to mechanics so i know some basics but i have some holes in knowledge which lead to me doing dumb things on occasion.

So after buying my tacoma i took it in to have the coolant flushed. When they inspected the power steering they found it was all gunked up and they saidit was the worst they had ever seen. So i paid them to flush it out.

The next day the power steering started whining like crazy and within twenty miles i lost all power steering and the fluid was black. So i decided to replace the pump by myself.

I was able to replace the pump but soon learned i did not flush the fluid properly and used regular power steering fluid instead of destron III. After a twenty mile test drive the fluid is pnce again black and it is once again screaming.

The pump is currently working. I have researched and found the proper way to flush and bleed the system using this procedure...

    https://www.yotatech.com/how-tos/a/toyota-tacoma-how-to-bleed-air-out-of-power-steering-pump-415084

My question is... Should i just flush the system and see if it stops the scream or should i also replace the pump eventhough it is currently providing power? Or should i do something else entirely. Any input or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Where is the screaming coming from? Is it the pump, belt? I would do a extra good flush with the recommended fluid and hope for the best.

I believe from the pump. Sound like the noise the pump would make while low on fluid, just worse.

They tend to make screaming noises when the screen/grate at the bottom of the reservoir is gunked up. Mine was doing it when I got it. I used one of those little mityvac pumps to suck the fluid out right off the top of the grate. Then I put in fresh fluid and ran it for a few days, then repeated. Got some interesting gunk out of it and it no longer screams.
