So I happened to have one of the Tacoma’s that qualified to have the frame replaced under warranty due to rust. Some of the greatest news I’ve ever received.

After the new frame was installed, I would hear this metal on metal clunk when going over aggressive dips or bumps. This drove me insane and I tested several experiments here and there to figure out what it was.

After almost a year with the new frame and mulling over the Haynes manual, I happened to notice that my new frame was lacking what they call a “spring bumper” mounted on top of the lower control arm between that and the frame.

I order the spring bumper - one for each side and low and behold, the clunk is now gone. I’m a very happy man right now.

However, I’m a little concerned that 7k miles with the lower control arm hitting the frame has caused some damage to the control arm. What do you think? I can see a small dent on the lower control arm where it hits the frame without the spring bumper.

I do have an appointment with the dealership next week to see what they think and to see if I can get the spring bumpers that should have been installed reimbursed.

    Thanks!

Yup, Haynes manual called it “spring bumper” but I remember the parts technician at the dealership calling it a “bump stop”

Go get'em man. The dealership should have put them in for you so I figure they should reimburse you for your trouble.
