Yeah, 70k people isn't conducive to the event of yore. But if you still want to relive the anarchy of early versions of the event, I recommend heading out there in early July. Heck, it's BLM country, so it's open year-round for all to enjoy. Both options are pretty cool in their own context.

I find that literally every subtype of burning is still present among the 70k. Raver kids, hippies, stoners, obsessed artists, spiritualists. It's a fantastic melting pot of self-expression. My only complaint is for the "bucket list" club-kid tourists who don't respect the playa and piss everywhere in the middle of the night when they're too lazy to find a porto. I hate that.

I started trying to go in the mid 90's when I first heard about it, but lived all the way across the country and couldn't get anybody to go with me to that "naked thing in the desert." When I finally went in 2014 I wished I'd been going for the previous 20 years. One of my few regrets in life. My point: don't wait...just go! (I felt the same way after I finally traveled abroad for the first time at 26).

First time Taco owner ('18 TRD OR), first time Burner here. My truck was a wonderful companion on the Playa. Any advice about care post-return? Are you changing filters? Anything else to spare it from the damage of the dust?

Replace the main air filter and cabin filter. I typically will pressure wash all the nooks and crannies, specifically underneath. Inside I'll vacuum and wipe down all surfaces.

And know this: you can never get rid of all the dust. I've been taking my trucks out there for sixteen years and they do fine.

I've done bush festivals, but shit I don't think I could live in the desert for a week, still looks cool from the pictures.

Yup. All this and just live with the dust. My biggest complaint and chore is how hard it is to get the embedded playa out of the trim and exterior plastic. I skipped a year in 2018 and I STILL had traces of playa in my window trim when I went this year. I thought about trying to coat it with something like oil, but figured it might actually attract more dust. Just elbow grease and living with it. Luckily being a pickup it's a lot easier to keep your cab clean over having an SUV because the vast majority of your gear only infects the bed with dust as opposed to the whole vehicle interior.

My old pickup made about 10 trips to the playa. I tried cleaning out the nooks and crannies this year but gave up.

    Embrace the dust.

4th of Ju-playa is a pretty good time. I was out there last year and at night it was like island hopping from one point of light in the distance to another. A really great experience.

My mother really enjoys Burning Man, but has no desire to attend in person. She lives the event vicariously by watching the live feed and tries to spot my vehicle across the playa: a white pickup truck, just like all of the other white pickup trucks out there. Her solution to spot me easier on the live feed was to make a couple of banners that that I could attach to my vehicle. Here I am, Mom. I’m by the Man today.
