    Rust takes up a lot more volume than steel. You could always use a wire wheel to scrape it off, sand it, and throw some header paint on it.

    My “stainless” exhaust hasn’t been so stainless. It has stained “less”, but is by no means stain-free.

    I took most of the scale off that part with a wire brush and it doesn’t look too bad. I found the culprit for me is mud and silt tends to cake on the front of that coupling, so I make sure to hose it off now.

    Mostly stuff I built.
    The tubing on the Tacoma exhaust is 304L stainless. The flanges are A36 mild steel. They are welded together with a 309 filler wire. In the OP’s case I am willing to bet they live in the rust belt so they are seeing rust fairly early on.

    Wire brush the big chunks off. Coat it in rust converter and paint it with some high temp paint. Should prolong the inevitable by a little.

    Wow! That fitting looks like the hull of the Titanic, and the rest of the pipe is so clean!
