I been fighting the rear U joint on my 98 Tacoma for 2 days now. I even broke down and rented the press but no luck. They lack going in by about .010 or so. Had one popped the skirt off a cap even. Both from O'Rileys. My PO decided to pull the tag off the door so all I have to go by is the VIN and registration. It is a 98 with the 2.7 manual tranny and non automatic diff and has lock outs.

Had one a needle bearing came loose and was in bottom of the cap. The others never did that and have had em in and out several times. Am about to the point of shooting it and put out of it's misery.

Does the single piece driveshaft use a different U joint then the one that runs a carrier bearing?

Rockauto has different parts for the reg cab and access cab for my 2000. Which do you have, and what PN is the ujoint you're trying to put in?

I have no idea what the part number is. Mine is a regular cab 2.7 with 5 speed manual non automatic differential and manual hubs. It runs a single rear drive shaft. Autozone and Oriley's both gave me no option and both joints were too long to let the inside clips to engage.

Looks right to me. Maybe put the joint in the freezer and gently warm up the driveshaft.

Done did that and result was it deformed the clips and one popped off. Lost a cap within 3 miles. No driveline special shops around that I know of as I am new to the area as well.

I no longer mess with U-joints I have a place that replaces them with Labor cheaper then I can buy the parts

I am lucky I have 2 drive Shaft builders as customers

Gotta be a drive line shop within a hundred miles unless your in Alaska

Finally got it together. Found a slight ridge built up and filed it down back to flat. The last clips were tight but fully seated. Hope is the last I need to deal with that joint other then grease it.
