The oil is thin, but with 10k on it, was still very clean looking.

I changed the oil myself @ 3,980 miles, with Toyota brand 0w20. The dealer did the 10k, 20k & 30k changes. I did the 40k.

Truck is driven gently, and the maintenance is done per the schedule in the book.

EDIT: Can't say for sure what the dealer used for oil. I used Toyota for the first one. For the 40k I used 5 quarts Mobil 1, and 1.2 quarts of the Toyota oil.

That very first oil change is what worries me. 10k on a brand new motor seems like a long way to go while things are still being broken in.

So if i understand it correctly, they recommend doing oil changes at 7500k?

    Agreed.

That is not how I read that. He is stating the averages listed are for 7,500 oil change intervals. I didn't pay for the TBN or whatever it is called to estimate how much oil life was left. I probably should next time, but that won't be for a while (80k miles).

Looks like they base their averages on a 7500 mile change so his is is doing well at 10k

Interesting that the factory fill had sheered down to 6.9cSt in 3,980 mile.

No it won't, not until oil ceases to exist. Everyone thinks they are smarter than the engineers.

Until he samples again. Change it every 10K and sample every 40K. Standard practice. I used to sample a lot until I understood.

Can you guide me in that direction so I can read up on it? I was under the impression you send in a sample every oil change? What I got from their July 2018 newsletter is that you send in 3 consecutive oil changes to establish a trend.

Yep. But after that trend you start spacing them out. Statistics. If your first three are fine then chances are that your next three will be fine. Then sample again to make sure, then go four or so. Then salple again. BasicLly you are extending the sample rate because of history.

I will change the oil every 10k. More tests might be better but I'm not really concerned about wear in this motor like it was the racecar back where I sent many samples in.

It is just a curiosity or thing that interests me.

I agree with the statistics part, but I'm also using it as a diagnostic tool for early warning of other issues... fuel and coolant contamination. So, I'm testing at 10k miles.
