I am looking at purchasing a 10' kayak and was curious if anyone had much experience transporting kayaks or canoes. I am currently looking at buying a roof rack and mounting the kayak on top of the cab instead of dropping the tailgate and putting it in the bed. I'm a college student, and I do not have any permanent storage for the kayak, so it would probably just be kept mounted to my cab whenever I'm not using it. Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated.

Find storage. Someone will steal it otherwise. Tons of threads on hauling yaks here.

Factory roof rack would have more than enough capacity for a 10’ boat. I wouldn’t leave it on the truck. One reason is it’ll grow legs and the other being the UV rays will eat up the hull and make it brittle. I’d find a storage locker or something like that.

Keeping a kayak mounted to your truck full time is a bad idea. It's your life though. Good luck and have fun!

Inflatable kayak. Roll it up and throw it in the bed. No rack needed.

Has anyone ever bought a set of roof yak racks and custom modified them to fit the bed? Use 2x’s to make them removable.. would have to keep the tail down tho

Thule 450R Foot pack is designed to attach onto factory raised siderails. No fit kit required!

That’s pretty awesome. Had Thule had those in production back when I had my 2013 Tacoma, I would have gone that route. Lifting to the roof isn’t fun, especially after a long morning of paddling and the Texas sun heating up.

Is that rust or just a reflection on the key lock?

Yes just a reflection of the lock. I had this set up on my Honda Pilot and used a different foot pack with aero blades with Hullavator on Accord. As much as I would love to have a prinsu it doesn’t out weight the Hullavator for me.

I use a towhitch extender. Much easier than trying to get my 80 pound kayak on my bed racks. Lol

If you have no storage for a yak, or are frequently changing dorms/apartments/rent houses, get yourself a decent inflatable. You can get a damn nice one for less than what you would have spent on a hardside + roof rack. For the multiple reasons mentioned above.

I haul multiple kayaks/canoes most weekends. A 10ft kayak will lay in the bed fine with the tailgate down... Only hangs over a few feet. I often stack two 10 ft kayaks on top of each other in the bed with the gate down. If you get something longer, the t-bone by boondox works great and is way easier than putting something on your roof. I have a Thule xporter bed rack which I much prefer over a cab rack but I only use it when hauling 3+ kayaks/canoes. It is nice for hauling lumber too though.

Folding Kayaks- I carry our two Folbot 18-foot double expedition Ready Greenland II sea kayaks inside my DCSB. You can ship these in a bush plane, and store them in a tall cabinet too. They also make folding singles, too.

The company is out of business, so there are a lot of great deals for them online.
