Recommendations for handheld police/fire scanner

    Howdy all,

    My wife and I are will shortly be moving to our new home, which is a bit out of town, in a very rural area. I'd like to get a handheld scanner to monitor the police/fire channels so that if a major fire or other event in our area is headed our way, I might have some warning. We both currently have scanner apps on our phones, but cell reception in our new area is very iffy.

    Any thoughts on brands / models would be much appreciated.

    HAM radio would be a nice option, but most likely not in the immediate future.

    Do some research on whether your locality uses digital or analog, whether or not they're trunked, and what frequencies they use . That will determine what kind of scanner you should be looking at.

    I recently picked up a pair of Uniden Bearcat 125AT's, one each for me and my wife. They pick up decently, we are probably 5ish miles from the Sheriff's HQ, and I presume their main broadcast location. I have some of the primary frequencies form our county official web site, but looking to see if I can find any others that may be of interest.
