I just went to look at the 2014 toyota tacoma couple weeks ago ended up buying it it looked like new and i got the certified toyota warranty, All the other trucks i looked at had high miles and stained seats no warranty etc. so i paid a lil xtra low miles and warranty i didnt want something with out warranty i love to go for drives in the mountains and have piece of mind that im not going to break down. I allready drove it from calif to colorado no problems but im looking to buy a travel trailer. The manuel says i can tow up to 6400 pounds but would like if someone here can tell me what a safe weight trailer should weigh. The rv guy said to get a travel trailer around 5000 lbs i dont want to max out the towing wieght. Does this sound about right? and maybe i should add on some xtra accessories on the truck for towing?

Welcome and congrats on the new truck. 5k would be a good mark to try and stay under depending on the conditions you are towing in. Keep in mind the altitude and mountains and adjust that if you are in those conditions. Also keep in mind what other weight you will have in and on the truck and in the trailer. Try to keep that at 5k or under and you should be fine. Know you MPG will take a steep hit while towing but that is the case with most anything and these trucks are not well known for great MPG anyway. Probably will want to replace the leaf packs in the back or add an AAL or 3 leaf pack to them. Pretty simply and does a good job but the factory rear springs are junk.

To be clear I would consider 5k the max with what is in the truck and trailer, including the trailer. Even then it will be a bear depending on conditions.

5000 pound trailer plus gear plus other people, kinda cutting it close. I've pulled a 5800 pound boat and it wasn't a fun trip. If you plan on pulling a trailer that big regularly I would look at a full size, or a smaller trailer.

ok get a smaller trailer then? The guy with trailer supposed to call me back on weight he says he thinks the dry weight is 5000 so ya probably to dam big it was nice 2. They wanted 8900 for it and i found one in carson city same thing for 13000 so it was a good deal

There are a lot of trailers on the market that are in the 3,500lb range and I would consider that optimal for your rig. Not sure what configuration you have but keep in mind the cross winds you might come up against. The short wheelbase of the Tacoma can cause them to get away from you quick if towing in a crosswind. It is not pulling the weight that is the issue it is stopping it and keeping it strait. Also make sure you get the correct hitch and sway bar setup, I see a lot of people towing to much weight without equalizer bars and that makes all the difference.

My neighbor was towing a 40’ camper without equalizer bars with a trailer with two jet skis behind his trailer. I saw his rig sitting across from my house and I was like “hey bro, I would not throw my family in that and head out” and he had no idea they even existed despite the receiver and trailer being setup for it. Just went and bought a 1 ton Dodge with a Cummins and figured he was good.

I wouldn’t go near that with a Tacoma, especially when towing at altitude and up hills in Colorado.

Look at keeping it around 4000 lbs dry and 24 ft max.

4000 lbs dry gives you a good margin to load up with gear and people.

The Tacoma wheelbase is too short for stability for anything longer than 24ft.

Yeah, that is way larger than I would touch with a Tacoma. Sorry. The equalizer bars normally come with the trailer.
