I enjoy picking my shift points. And something to point out is that most true Dual Clutch Transmissions are more base on a standard transmission then an Automatic.

As a fan of simple, reliable things, a manual transmission can't be beat. It will never overheat. You don't have to flush it. You don't have to worry about whether or not flushing it will screw it up.

Not to mention in most cases lighter, more compact, and more gas efficient due to less pumping losses.

Don't have to worry about a wear item like a clutch. Oh wait.

Yeah? When I toured the plant they said it was like 70% of Tacomas and all Tundras. Admittedly, that was 2012.

You’ll make it work. After a full knee rebuild and a robot stuck to my leg I still managed to get the clutch in. It sucked. But nothing awesome is easy.

The heavy equipment I maintain is computers driving manuals. I like the simplicity of it, it’s pretty cool. Anyway, that’s still old tech.

    1) Oh no doubt. The key to a good snark though is being right.

    2) The hard part is having all of the right parts, that walk to the store to exchange a clutch is a time killer. Once you get that down, its pretty straightforward.

I used to have a 98 Dodge Caravan with the A604 tranny that was about as reliable or useful as Caitlyn Jenner.

I would joke that the Chrysler A604 transmissions have to be changed like oil, ever 6 months or 6,000 miles.

One day I got so fed up with that pos on 98,000 miles with the third one dead (first one got replaced under warranty at 12k miles, Chrysler reliability). That I had enough and went to the JY and got a manual out of a Dodge Neon. Everything matched up. The Caravan is like a fat bloated Neon. The pedal assembly even bolted up!! I searched all over the net at the time and afaik I had the first/only 3rd gen Caravan 5 speed. That thing was a blast to drive afterwards. Gearing was horrendous and it wouldn't go over 70 mph but that thing really took off nice. I had the van gutted down to 2700 lb too so it was almost like driving a Neon just worse aero dynamics. I had to weld my own engine mounts, weld my own axle extension sleeve on passenger side axle. Oddly driver side fit just fine. Made a raised mount for the cable shifter assembly between seats. And short the neutral parking safety switch. All that custom work and it was still easier than putting up with the automatic. I even repeated the procedure for another customer and he loved it. When he finally got rid of his Caravan because it was too beat up from work and got one about 5 years newer with the pos auto again, he said he regretted it.

I've done a few other custom manual conversions as well. I love manuals. I thought about doing it to my Tacoma as well but just got too many projects going on right now and don't feel like hunting down parts.

I love my Taco, and I'm glad I got it in an A/T but I did miss having a manual. Plus, I get like 11-13mgp in the Taco and it's not really any fun to drive around the city anymore and I've done all the mods I planned to do...so I decided I needed a new toy.

Here she is, 2005 Carrera S with a manual and only 39k miles (now 42k). I flew out to Texas with my girlfriend and bought it and drove it back to Mass. Very happy, and think everyone should own one of these at some point in their lives
