There’s a nice fountain in front of a local bank. Short but very scenic paddle.

You ought to invest in a rack, that doesn't seem safe or a good idea. I think a good cross wind will make that an interesting drive.

we were going up the 15 headed toward Yellowstone with our 16' canoe securely tied down to a proper rack and stayed front and rear and the wind pushed my old full size truck around so much we had to get off for an hour or so. I wouldn't have wanted to do that same drive with that set up. I feel like you're asking for trouble.

I would be concerned about the boat getting screwed up if you hit a bump.

But he has a red ford hanging on the back. It has all necessary lights, and when spinning, it doubles as a disco ball.

Sorry, but that is just too much canoe sticking out past the bumper. And a long bed isn't enough bigger to matter. That is dangerous. You need another plan. I've hauled a 10' kayak in mine with the tailgate down. With my 5' bed I'm at 6' with the tailgate down That leaves me about 4' sticking out past the tailgate. With a hitch mounted bed extender I've gone as long as 12' and that is pushing it. With a 12' kayak and tailgate down I have 6' in the truck and 6' hanging out the back. I'd never recommend more outside the truck than inside. In fact what you are doing is probably illegal.

That doesn't look good for the canoe or safe for you and other drivers.

Yes, anything more that 4 feet outside the tailgate must be flagged. You dont want the guy behind you to catch a canoe in the face. With the red flag properly displayed, you are within the requirements of the state law

Darby industries makes a "extend a truck" that works in your hitch and extends the length by about 4 feet, adding some support midway through the canoe, and you can use it at pack storage as was stated. Love the red...

For those following this who are looking for a solution, Thule exporter or similar bed racks are great for smaller vessels (under 13 ft). A roof rack is best for canoes, as it will keep the boat centered at the cab, and wont have excessive overhang. That said, I had a rack on my 15 that clamped to the door still and had it come loose a few times with heavy loads. It also caused the weather stripping to tear where it contacted the brackets.
A bolt on rack is the way to go and the investment is worth it.

Now your port and starboard lights are backwards. :p

Seriously though, I bought a Big Red bed hitch extension for my short bed. Made hauling 16 foot planks a breeze.

All your canoes look like Lincolns compared to my 13 foot square stern. How long are they?
