You keep posting before I can reply haha.

I'd use an impact gun to blast that 3/8s cap off.

Or a channel lock to hold it.

Should be torqued to only 10 ft lbs I believe. I got mine off by wrapping the housing in some shop towels and placing it in a vise. A quick breaking-action with the breaker bar and it came loose. Hardly any torque is necessary when putting it back on, which will save you from having to do it again in the future.

I only hand tighten it. The housing itself I do torque down to spec which I believe is 18 ft lbs.
once torqued properly it should be just fine. My plastic canisters have been plenty durable between other models as well. Dealers don’t care about proper torque spec on them, and that’s when they become troublesome.

I never bothered with that little drain cap since getting the truck. :notsure: There's plenty of space around and below the filter housing, so all the oil spill into the drain pan without making a mess.

Be sure to saturate the threads with oil. Aluminum on aluminum can do bad things with galling.

Wife drives a 5th Gen 4Runner equipped with the filter/paper insert setup shown in this thread. The Japanese person who installed her filter housing during the 4Rs assembly tightened the small metal cap at the bottom so tight that I used it to get the whole assembly off during and oil/filter change. No oil filter tool needed. Just a 3/8" ratchet/breaker bar. It finally gave way about 90K. I now use this. W/O question the best tool for removing this type of oil filter housing. I have all of the tools made for this housing and they always get hung up. Not hard to break loose - just a pain. No issues with the one below:

Never Never Modify! Keep it aggravation free!
I worked at Toyota as a lube tech for a very short time. I was told do not remove the small plug, just remove the housing. Leave it alone!

that's what I end up having to do, but oil leaks everywhere if you don't drain it through that little plug first.

Toyota made our oil changes much harder 2nd gen to 3rd gen :frusty:

Just bought the metal filter housing for an oil change this weekend. Should I buy a new bolt?
