To answer your question, there is nothing wrong with leaving the keys in the ignition. Back home in the boonies the keys to my Corolla never left the ignition for years! Now living in the city I wouldn't try that but if the keys in the off position you're fine. And if you really want to get technical, I'm sure sliding the key in and out will wear the tumblers much faster than leaving the keys in the ignition with a heavy lanyard. That's all pretty negligible if you ask me.

Having said all that, how secure is your garage really and if your truck disappears will the insurance cover it if you left the keys inside. No denying now that you've posted it on the internet

My key lives in the ignition on my bike since it has a simple EFI with no immobilizer function. For our cars, since they have active IMMO, the keys lay on the shifter console or boot. The spare keys are on the shelf next to the garage stairs door.

I'd recommend not storing your key in the ignition.

If we had Push Start, it would be a shit show with the fobs being strew all about the house to not drain the car or fob batteries. Hard no for that BS.

That's a great question! Yes the garage door is always closed. And I have more teenage children around more than kid age children. But that's not a comforting thought, either.

So were the people that unwillingly lost their lives.

Life isn't perfect. Sometimes people make mistakes. It's better to be in the habit of being pro-active rather than just being lazy.

The only argument against is that someone-who-isnt-you might forget to close the garage.

Personally I live in an old house - about once a month or so the door will just decide to act up for some reason. It'll go 3/4 of the way down, and just about when you decide that its safe to leave the driveway it will kick back up again. Twice now Ive found it open, but fortunately i havent paid for that mistake yet. Now I watch it close all the way both coming and going, but I worry that it might be the girlfriends turn to forget to watch it.

In this day and age no one can say for sure that anything is completely secure, but you guys have helped me think through it a lot! Getting my truck stolen is the least of my concerns, honestly. And the MT is theft protection to a certain degree.
But safety is the issue--dont want anyone to get hurt. The key for the MT is huge and after trying it in every pocket, buying special key doohickies to attach it to my jeans, etc., and regularly walking up to my locked truck to get something out only to realize it is still sitting inside where I left it, I think I have to have a different plan at home than when I'm out.
When I'm out, I'll just have to figure out a way to keep that monstrosity on my person and live with it. Ideas, anyone?
At home I will leave it in my locked garage, but not in the ignition. My console organizer stores all kinds of cool doodads, candy, gum, etc. that would attract a kid, so I can't put the key there. I'll put it somewhere out of immediate sight--probably on the floorboard under the mat, or in that tiny storage spot left of the steering wheel. Even in the door. Strange that such a small thing can be such a pain!

Just what we need: more paranoid people running around trying to protect others from being stupid, and assuming others are as stupid as they fear.

I have a long habit of leaving my keys in the ignition, either in the garage or in the driveway. We don’t need a ton of security where we live (thankfully). With the new keyless, push button start car, I found the fob battery dies in less than a year. I am attempting to change my behavior for that reason.

I’m not sure the push button thing is much of a benefit except running errands in town with multiple quick stops. One of those “features” I could be fine without. Some new auto technology is good, others are just foofoo.

I don’t know for sure if leaving the key in the ignition could kill the battery or be bad, but the truck does definitely know the key is in even when off as displayed by the door chime. Lights and other sensors may not turn off as soon as they would with the key out.

My dad used to leave his keys in his vehicle but he would pull them out of the ignition and leave them in the cup holder. If I really wanted to leave my keys in for the reasons you do, I’d at least do that, just for piece of mind.

There is a physical switch in the barrel that kills the chime. There is mod thread around here that discusses how to remove it to kill the chime. I am not sure that it is using power to do that, just opening / closing a circuit somewhere.

Still, I'm a fan of not leaving a key in there while parked either.

I’m the opposite. I think the keyless action is one of the best features. Short errands, kids, hands full, hunting, fishing, cold weather or pretty much any other time you don’t want or have a free hand or dig around for where you secured your key fob.

My wife has been leaving her smart keys in her Jeep for over 2 years without a dead battery in the Jeep or on the fob.

With the fob in the car it would be pretty easy to accidentally leave the acc or even the truck on(not running, that’s just plain stupid). I’m guessing that’s where people are finding their batteries dead.
