Hey Guys, I have a 2019 trd offroad 4x4, and I have the locking differential but wanted to know what actually locks the rear?. I know my 3rd gen 4runner has a actuator that activates and locks the rear. But I dont see any kind of mechanism on this 2019. Is it done electronically internally or maybe with brakes, transmission? Any info would be great thx

    From the repair manual:

The differential system (w/ Differential Lock) directly connects the rear left and right wheels so that even if one wheel slips while driving where drive torque transmission is difficult (such as on sand), the drive torque of the other wheel is ensured and traction is provided in emergencies.

    For 4WD:
When the transfer is in L4 and the differential lock switch is operated, the 4 wheel drive control ECU supplies power to the solenoid to switch the rear differential from free to locked, and cuts power to switch the rear differential from locked to free.

    For 2WD:
When the differential lock switch is operated, the 4 wheel drive control ECU supplies power to the solenoid to switch the rear differential from free to locked, and cuts power to switch the rear differential from locked to free.

I believe the actuator that you're familiar with seeing on older models is now inside the housing rather than outside of it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't looked at a newer model but I seem to remember reading that somewhere

Ok thx, yea I looked at mine and was questioning how it locked. I am used to seeing the actuator on the older models. I know there are aftermarket arb and elockers out there so I was wondering is Toyota went with an internal elocker setup.

It's still an electronic locking diff like it was in earlier models just with the actuator in a different location

    Is the actuator internal?
