Would it be ill-advised...

Would it be ill-advised to put the rock defense tube bumper on a rear end with Safe T Caps?

  1. Don't do it, that shit would crack

I just got my rear frame end repaired with the Safe T Caps and I really want to put a Trail Gear Rock Defense rear bumper on it. Would that be a terrible idea? Or would that be okay? I think it weighs about 70lbs but I'm not sure.
Anyone have that bumper and also have Safe T Cap repairs?

    Thank you in advance!

If your frame wouldn't be able to have a light tube bumper put on as extra weight, the fix wasn't good at all.

Is that considered light? The thing is, I'm not sure if I should attempt it, which is why I'm asking.

I'm guessing a safetcap frame will be stronger than a regular one. No reason to worry.

Your frame is holding together a 3000 lb truck.

It comes down to the person who installed your extra parts .

Yes some people can make things worse.

If your worried about a bumper then make sure you never recover the vehicle from the rear or think of towing anything .

    Stock. EZ pass.Dump pass.Inspection sticker.Convict printed lic.plates.FG cap.
After caps your frame is at least 1/4" wider than stock. Could pose a mounting problem as bumpers and hitches mount outside frame rails Shims?

This is probably why it wouldn't work, and something I didn't even think about.

I think I have pics somewhere before the work was done but I didn't have good lighting.

This is all really great and relevant info. I appreciate your guys' input!!

If you're worried about the frame repair holding up to a little extra weight on the truck, I certainly wouldn't be driving it!

For fitment, It just depends on how far back your caps go. The caps in the thread that @Fuergrissa posted don't go anywhere close to where a rear bumper mounts, so that shouldn't be a concern.

But if you have the rear shackle mount plates too, then you'll have some fitment issues with the additional thickness. It's nothing that can't be fixed with a little :sawzall: and :welder:.

That said, a rear bumper really isn't that hard to fabricate, they are very simple.

You could do something like this kit. The main frame mounts are 3/4" that protrude through the bumper for shackle mounts. All you'd have to do is cut the holes in the plate a little wider, then fill the gap (which would only be 1/4").

    @jbrandt found the proper link

Pretty cool design 11 gauge (approx 1/8th) channel with cut outs to slide on the frame with the bed on. It does specify to remove the bumper and drill holes to remount bumper

Dimensionally: As @Black DOG Lila stated you now an additional .25” to account for. Best bet would be to contact the the fab company and confirm fitment before buying.

Structurally: depends on the condition of what the safe T cap sits on and how the repair was carried out. Personally the bed should be removed durin the repair to allow for proper cleaning/prep for the frame.

If the frame is decent your gouda as you are adding plate thickness

@jenk interested in seeing the repair work.
