Adding LSD to 2nd gen prerunner. Options?

    Long story short, sold my 1st gen TRD O/R yesterday because I have a new baby boy and I need a 4 door truck. I’m looking at 2nd gens now, and I found a really nice low mileage DCLB but it’s a basic 4x2 SR5 with open diff. I used my locker on my 1st gen quite frequently when pulling my boat out of the water, so I’m hesitant to buy an open diff truck. What are my after market options for adding a locker or preferrably a limited slip diff?

    TrueTrac is great. I have one. Simple, works, no funny fluid needed. No more one wheel peels in the rain trying to merge. More sideways fun (if you're into that sort of thing :D)

    I went with a PowerTrax, was easy to install in a few hours DIY. Problem with the lunchbox lockers is driving in the rain can be tricky if you like to apply more than 10% throttle in turns.

    Edit: I just noticed that you mentioned LSD. Which mine is not. I'd recommend the Detroit True Trac based on what I've heard & read, it was on my final list when I was in the market.

    Truetrac is hands down the best LSD on the market. The torsion gear based design is far superior to clutch packs in other LSDs. Power transfer is seamless and there are no clutches to wear out or required gear oil additives to worry about. I’ve installed them in multiple trucks, one of my favorite mods.

    On another note, I had a 1st Gen DCSB when I had my kid, the truck was too small. Sold it for a DCSB 2nd Gen and it was a way better fit for having a baby. Congrats on the new addition to the family!

    I have a true trac and I love it. However in some situations, it is not enough. For example, I had 4wd and my back tires were hitting a dip and front driver hitting a rock face. Due to the dip and slick rock, i was not able to overcome the bump of the front tire. However, a true locker would have been no problem so just keep in mind, it is not a true locker.

    Road manners are fantastic and i would had to drive in rain without it.

    One thing that i have yet to be able to perfect, is how to get the true trac to send 50/50 to both rear wheels. Some say tap the brakes, some say it is auto but i have had many situations like the one above where i tried it all and it wasnt sending power to both. Anyone know how or if this is possible?

    If one tire is in the air or is spinning, don't tap the brakes but apply brakes slowly and evenly until 50/50 distribution is achieved (parking brake can be applied in cases of rear TrueTrac). Then go!

    How does this work? Because of the physics of a worm gear/spur gear relationship explained in the 2nd video in post #7 at about 3:40

    Another option is finding a 2005-2008 trd sport third member and installing that. Those came with clutch pack lsd from the factory. Some sr5 models may have had the lsd, but for sure the trd sports did. They stopped doing that in 2009 when they switched to the electronic traction control called “auto-lsd” which doesn’t work that great.

    also, if you are adding LSD you might as well add new gears to 4.10 or greater depending on setup.

    All of those trucks have likely accumulated enough miles on them that the factory OEM LSD is likely long-gone worn out and will need a full rebuild. I've read the clutch driven LSD service lives can range from 30-90k depending on how they're used. I know the one on my wife's 06 Sport doesn't do a whole lot in the way of enhancing traction anymore at 195k.

    That's another bonus for the TrueTrac. It doesn't require special maintenance, doesn't need special friction modifiers in the gear oil like clutch driven LSD's do and they're tough as nails because of all of that gear surface area sharing the load. I'm waiting for Eaton to release one for our front 8" reverse clamshell diffs and I'll be jumping in with F/R Truetracs and 4.30 or 4.56 gears from East Coast Gear Supply.

    Thanks for all the input guys! I’m actually not gonna pull the trigger on that truck. Looking at a 2013 TRD sport now. But looking at these videos and what you guys are saying about this differential, I may just have to upgrade from the factory LSD to the true-trac one day! Looks like genius engineering.

    I’m not a fan of the black fender flares on the O/R. And I prefer the look of the faux skewp. :cool:
