My wife and I took a nine day trip to Iceland. We got a Suzuki Jimny 4x4, M/T to drive around and it was awesome!

Most of you probably know already; the Jimny used to be sold in the US as the Suzuki Samurai up until '95. It still lives in exile as the Jimny, we rented the recently refreshed 2019 model.

It is basically a street legal side by side ATV. It has adorable tiny little solid axles front and rear.

Above is another one better optioned than the one we rented with some larger tires.

How much was the rental per day & total? I know it may vary, but I'd like an idea of pricing to see if it's something to put on the list.

$683 USD for 9.5 days. The older model would have been a little cheaper.

I'm looking into getting one. Most are pretty beat up by now. They seem pretty identical to the new ones.

It's a shame that they aren't sold in the US anymore just because they're extremely unsafe.

I would do this but the reality is that there isn't enough opportunity to legally off-road here in the US to justify it.

Iceland is literally one huge off-road park. They have 'F Roads' which are totally legal to drive on. They can and do get pretty intense.

I've had it for about four years now. Got from the original owners family who used it as a tow behind for his RV, so low mileage. I added an OME lift, Snorkel, Lock-Rite Locker and Petroworks regeared Xfer Case which offers 2LO. Since the regeared Xfer Case I really need to step up tire size but there's other projects/priorities....

Here is a river crossing on an F Road that I chickened out on.IMG_20190924_121140.jpg 00000IMG_00000_BURST20190924120943240_COVER.jpg

I was 90% sure it wouldn't be a problem, but without backup, recovery gear, plus being isolated in a harsh climate, I wasn't going to risk it. Also the rental company told me not to cross rivers in it.

There transmission is 5 speed and reverse is where 6th is on the pattern in my Tacoma. Needless to say I ground R some trying to put it into '6' while cruising on the highway. IMG_20190917_112347.jpg

Now I've put my Tacoma into 6th and tried to reverse a couple times since I got back.

Here is a video of a side road we took down around a hill. We thought it connected back to the main road at the bottom but ran into a boulder field and had to turn back. Another great feature of the Jimny is the ability to turn around on a dime. The trail is much more steep than it appears on the video. I had a mild panic moment because I was not certain we could get back up. The video ends but you can see the obstacle in the last frame; it's a step up on slick rock and loose gravel. Little Jimny did not break a sweat, did not slip a wheel once on the obstacle.

Another river crossing. I'm no Marty McFly, you can call me chicken. Didn't want to explain to the rental company why I took their vehicle whitewater rafting. Also, didn't want to drown or die of exposure. This was a 30 min drive back to the main road.

    Found this rendering:

I was thinking the whole time how cool a little truck version would be.
