    Next Update.

I was able to get the timing cover and head off of the engine. Turns out I had all the bolts out. I just needed to work along the seam with a putty knife. They gasket sealer they used was good stuff.

You can see on the front left where it appears the gasket failed.

You can see the oil buildup on the corresponding surface of the head. Looks like both cylinders 1 and 2 were compromised which lines up with the p0301 and p0302 codes I was getting.

Interestingly the head was dirtier on the front two cylinders but the back two pistons were WAY dirtier. It took a lot of work to get them clean.

I dropped the head off at the machine shop yesterday and it is supposedly going to be done tomorrow so I will have it for the weekend which is nice.

    That’s for keeping use updated.
I have been following this project of yours closely.
This is something that I’d love to do myself.
But am too nervous and unassure of myself to try.

    If I was in this boat myself, and had the funds;

LCE Header. Hands down the best upgrade to the 2tr!
LCE Pro clutch kit. If it's a manual. 200k is a lot on the poopy stock clutch, toasted mine wheeling at 60k or so, enough that I wanted to replace it.
LCE valve train kit. I mean, the head is out after all and getting work done.
    Turbo?

Hell! Just send it to LCE with a blank check :D

That’s a stainless MLS head gasket, which requires a very smooth surface on head and block to seal correctly so definitely don’t use a needle gun. Felpro makes a performance MLS gasket which has an outer layer that was developed with Formula 1, because they were blowing out MLS gaskets- it’s really good. I believe Audi is using it for their OE gasket now. I used it on my build.

That pdf I listed will give you part numbers for the Toyota gasket maker, there’s two different ones you’ll need when reassembling- get both don’t skimp on that part

LCE will have specific torque instructions included, follow those over the pdf and for goodness sake torque every single bolt properly- if you don’t have the wrenches get them from Auto Zone rental

just curious how much the machine work cost you? Trying to get an idea of what the entire process costs minus your labor. Down here you can go to a pick and pull and (assuming you can find the engine you need) get a used engine for $250-300.

Oh man my wallet is hiding under the bed right now.

    The header is very tempting.

The clutch went and was replaced about 30k miles ago so if that goes again at some point I’ll do the upgrade.

I think the turbo is definitely out of my price range.

I didn’t see the train kit listed on LCE’s website. Link?

The machine shop just called. The head was warped and the valve seats and valves needed resurfacing. $450. Not sure how good of a price that is. I went with this shop on a recommendation from someone I trust. I didn’t shop around.

I ordered a stainless gasket set from LCE already. Not knowing better myself I just decided to trust them on this part selection.

I clean the block with a razor blade and checked it for flatness. It is very flat and within spec. I am certainly not going to use a needle gun on it.

Not sure if you are suggesting I go with something other than the stainless steel one I now have?
